FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR, DUTCHESS CHAMBER’S WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP ALLIANCE HOSTING THE HUDSON VALLEY CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY ON MARCH 8 AT WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON STATE PARK.
Since it was first celebrated in the early 1900s, women from across the world have gathered on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day – both as celebration of women in the community, and an opportunity to educate people about the plight of women in other countries. The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Alliance (WLA) is proud to again host the Hudson Valley celebration on Friday, March 8 beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway Over the Hudson.
Attendees will meet at 61 Parker Avenue in Poughkeepsie to visit local women’s organization booths, listen to live music, sign a 15-foot peace banner, learn about the issues surrounding women around the world and much more prior to joining hundreds of women in the community to march in solidarity across the Walkway Over the Hudson. “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum” is the theme of the WLA’s 2013 event. Over time and distance, the equal rights of women have progressed. This year, International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change as women look to capitalize on global momentum for championing women’s equality. Men and women and those both young and old are encouraged to attend.
The first 500 guests will receive a custom-made pair of gloves that was commissioned by the WLA from Women’s Work, a Fair Trade retail store located in Poughkeepsie. This one order of gloves, which were hand-created in Bolivia using fair-trade principles, provides each artisan with the equivalent of one-years’ salary.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by Manuela Roosevelt, CEO of Springwood Media LLC, a digital publisher of highly innovative academic learning systems, and the granddaughter of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as Carla Goldstein, chief external affairs officer of Omega Institute and co-founder of the Omega Women’s Leadership Center. Macallan Durkin, the 18-year-old founder of Goody Goodies, an organization that provides a meaningful vehicle for youth advocacy to provide assistance to children who have suffered a loss, will serve as the featured youth speaker.
COBESO, Inc., DCH Wappingers Falls Toyota, Health Quest, KeyBank, Omega Institute for Holistic Studies, Ulster Savings Bank and Vassar College proudly sponsor International Women’s Day. For more information or to make your complimentary reservations to attend, please visit wlahv.org.
