20th Annual Volleyball Tournament Raises over $10,000 to Support Homeless Shelter in Dutchess
The 20th Annual Rooftime Volleyball Tournament was once again a resounding success, raising over $10,000 to support the Dutchess County Coalition for the Homeless (DCCH), an emergency shelter operated by Hudson River Housing. A group of local sports enthusiasts affectionately called “the volleyball geeks” hosted the tournament on the campus of Oakwood Friends School July 21st and 22nd. In its 20 year history, the tournament has raised over $100,000 in support of the shelter.
The event is spearheaded by Stephen Anania and Shari Wingard. Through their tireless efforts, each year hundreds of volleyball enthusiasts descend on Oakwood Friends School to engage in some friendly competition, with all player registration fees going directly to support DCCH. This year the tournament drew over 230 players.
DCCH was founded in 1986, and provides shelter, two meals, showers, laundry, transportation and case management services for up to 60 homeless men and women each night. DCCH operates 365 nights of the year, and is often near capacity even in the summer months. Recently, DCCH has seen an increase in the number of young people using the shelter, as well as an increase in individuals experiencing homelessness for the first time. In 2011, DCCH provided shelter for nearly 500 individuals.
Rooftime 21 has already been scheduled for July 20th and 21st, 2013.
