UCAT WEEKEND HOLIDAY SHOPPING MALL BUS LOOP
This morning, County Executive Mike Hein launched a UCAT Weekend Holiday Shopping Mall Bus Loop to make it easier for holiday shoppers to shop locally and to ease traffic congestion during the busy holiday season. In addition to weekdays, the bus will loop will run on Saturdays and Sundays between November 24 and December 23, from 9 AM until 5:25 PM. The schedule and route map are attached.
“Ulster County stores have something for everyone on your holiday shopping list,” said County Executive Hein. “You can park your car once and then get on the bus at any one of 9 locations throughout the area. The bus loop stops at stores, banks and other businesses, and when you get hungry, the bus stops at great area restaurants as well.”
Last year, the Ulster County Transportation Council (UCTC) initiated a Transit System Coordination and Development Plan, designed to identify, update and validate bus and para transit needs. In April, County Executive Hein formed a Public Transportation Task Force with a diverse group of stakeholders in order to review the Ulster County bus system and the UCTC’s plan. Members of the Task Force included County officials, public transportation experts, and users of the system. The Task Force members identified the need for this weekend holiday bus loop.
County Executive Hein stated, “I would like to thank the members of the Public Transportation Task Force for taking the time to review the County’s bus system and make this thoughtful recommendation.”
According to Robert DiBella, Director of Ulster County Area Transit, “This concept came from the Transit Task Force meetings organized by the County Executive’s office. UCAT riders appreciate County Executive Hein’s understanding of the importance of public transportation to our community. They are also grateful for how quickly he was able to make it happen. Expanded hours during this holiday season are intended to make shopping easier, while conserving gas and alleviating traffic.”
Ward Todd, President of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce said, “This initiative by Ulster County Executive Mike Hein and UCAT will be a tremendous help to our members in retail during the upcoming holiday season. The Chamber is an advocate for shopping locally, especially this time of year since money spent in our region circulates 7 times in our local economy. Shopping in Ulster County keeps local people employed and the sales tax generated holds down property taxes. The Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce urges everyone to shop local and use the UCAT Shopping Mall Bus to make that shopping experience a great one!”
Terry Parisian, General Manager of the Hudson Valley Mall added, “I think it’s a great idea that the County Executive is able to extend the UCAT hours to enable the citizens of Ulster County to shop locally.”
In addition to promoting shopping local, stimulating the economy and reducing congestion in the area, this bus loop is environmentally friendly, as all loop buses are either hybrids or have low particulate diesel engines.
