A Pennsylvania truck driver is facing charges after his truck struck a car Monday on the Newburgh-Beacon bridge.
State police say that 49 year old James Tiedeken was driving drunk when his truck lost control on the westbound span of the bridge striking a car driven by Elissa Betterbid of New Jersey.
The accident halted traffic for several hours as crews tried to clear the scene into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Tiedeken’s truck crossed the median and collided head-on with Betterbid’s Subaru about 9:30 PM. Betterbid was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where she was treated for injuries to her head and leg as well as internal injuries.
Tiedeken was charged with vehicular assault, a felony, driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
