This Week In Orange County by Edward Diana April 6 2012

This week we join with communities throughout the nation in recognition and celebration of National Public Health Week. This annual observance, first recognized in 1995, is a time to mark the role public health plays in our daily lives and make note of the many contributions public health officials have made, and continue to make, in our daily lives. From vaccinations and safe water to tobacco, alcohol, and drug awareness, as well as restaurant inspections and motor vehicle safety, public health contributes significantly to our health and well-being.

Picking up on this year’s National Public Health Week theme, A Healthier American Begins Today: Join the Movement, the Orange County Department of Health, under the leadership of Dr. Jean Hudson, is working to encourage residents to take preventive measures and adopt simple wellness goals to help improve their overall health. Little steps can lead to big changes Dr. Hudson reminds us.

Through the Orange County Department of Health’s website, www.healthyorange.com, residents can find a wealth of important and practical health and wellness information. Here you’ll find a message from Dr. Hudson, Orange County Health Commissioner, updates on current health concerns, healthy eating and exercise tips for people of all ages, smoking cessation information, and so much more. The Healthy Orange Team was recently recognized by the New York State Department of Health for their good work and accomplishments and is even featured on the NYS DOH website Public Health Works! this week. It’s a pretty special recognition to have our Orange County public health team as the featured department during Public Health Week. Congratulations Healthy Orange Team – keep up the great work!

This week we also joined with The Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Orange County (ADAC) to kick-off Alcohol Awareness Month in Orange County. Tragically, alcohol is a primary factor in the four leading causes of death for young people ages 10 to 21 and young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence. Believe it or not, the typical American will see 100,000 beer commercials before he or she turns 18 – that’s more than for sneakers, gum, and jeans combined!

In recognition of Alcohol Awareness month, for the past 25 years ADAC has sponsored a county-wide poster contest to promote the message of alcohol and drug abuse prevention. More than 1,100 Orange County students submitted posters illustrating the theme “Celebrate Life … Stay Alcohol and Drug Free!” Congratulations to this year’s grand prize winners – Sarah Goodhill, Grade 6, Bishop Dunn Memorial School for the winning Spanish language poster and Damien Jefferson, Grade 9, John A. Flannery High School for the winning English language poster. Thank you to all the students who participated in this year’s contest and the teachers who helped promote this important message.

Until next week, wishing you good health and happiness,

Edward A. Diana
County Executive
