With prom and graduation season upon us, I’d like you to join with me in reminding the young people in our lives to make smart choices and think safety first as they enjoy their end of school year activities. While I don’t want to put a damper on a good time, I do believe it’s critically important for students to remember that the choices they make while they’re enjoying the festivities can have the very real potential to change their lives – sometimes forever – especially when alcohol becomes involved.

The Orange County Stop DWI program is dedicated to increasing awareness of the dangers of driving while intoxicated so that the senseless deaths that happen each and every day may be avoided. Their website at www.orangecountystopdwi.com offers some sobering statistics and important information regarding the dangers of alcohol, as well as tips to be smart and safe.

Tragically, alcohol-related car crashes are the number one killer of young people ages 15 to 24; and beer is the number one alcoholic beverage consumed before a fatal car crash. Wine coolers, malt beverages, and hard iced teas and lemonades contain alcohol and are not safe alternatives for teenagers.

Be sure to talk with your child to help ensure they have a safe night and understand the consequences of their actions.

Know who your child will be with and the events he or she will be attending.
Make sure they understand it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol.
Discuss guidelines and a curfew. If plans change, you should be contacted.
Consider using a reputable car service for transportation.
Pre-plan and role play with your child to help him understand how to get out of uncomfortable situations.
Most importantly, remind your child that you are there for him or her, and you should be called if a ride is needed. You’d rather see them safe, than be nervous about your reaction.

Teens should keep these safety tips in mind:

Underage drinking is illegal and can kill.
Don’t let friends drink and drive.
Share your plans with your parents and communicate with them if your plans change.
Have your cell phone with you and call someone if you are in an unsafe or uncomfortable situation.
Trust your instincts, if you feel endangered, leave immediately.
It is illegal to alter your drivers’ license or government identification.

Too often we hear stories of young people whose special event goes from one of celebration to one of tragedy. Let’s work together to keep our young people safe as they mark their important milestones this year so that they may enjoy many more to come.

Until next week, wishing you good health and happiness,
