56 year old Lance Muckenhaupt of New Hyde Park was arrested and charged Monday with starting the fire that damaged property and several buildings including the old Tamarack Lodge in Sullivan County.

The Nassau County man was charged with two felony counts of arson in connection with the fire that destroyed 30 buildings and 50 acres of woodland.

According to the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Muckenhaupt was allegedly burning brush Saturday on the property and was unable to keep the fire contained which lead to the fire spreading across the Tamarack property.

Muckenhaupt didn’t have a permit and there is a ban on any open burning until May 15.

He was charged with two counts of fourth-degree arson and four misdemeanor charges under state environmental conservation law, including setting a fire without clearing the area, burning without a permit, setting a fire than endangers property, and opening burning during a statewide burning ban.

Muckenhaupt was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond. Additional charges are pending.

Ulster County Sheriff’s detectives were assisted by the Ulster County Arson Task Force, State DEC Police and State Police.

Firefighters from across the Hudson Valley including companies from Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties helped fight a blaze that destroyed the old Tamarack Lodge on Route 52 and damaged 44 other buildings.

The Saturday afternoon fire was still under investigation but initial reports say that an intentionally set brush fire may be the cause. Charges are likely against at least one person. At a press conference this morning police called the fire intentional and in complete violation of the current statewide brush burning ban, which is a misdemeanor.

The property is owned and maintained by the Western Mohegan Tribe. On march 9, they filed for bankruptcy.

The raging fire destroyed the clubhouse, poolhouse and 18 people were able to escape without any injuries before the flames destroyed the 10 buildings that were occupied.

Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the evening as strong winds spread the flames.

The investigation is still ongoing.
