Jump at the Pump – Daily Hudson Valley News http://www.hvinsider.com/articles Online news source for the Mid Hudson Region Fri, 01 May 2015 05:10:35 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.6.2 Dutchess Chamber Stop the Price Jump at the Pump Campaign http://www.hvinsider.com/articles/dutchess-chamber-stop-the-price-jump-at-the-pump-campaign/ Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:18:10 +0000 http://www.hvinsider.com/articles/?p=7234 DUTCHESS COUNTY REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RE-INTRODUCES CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE PRICE JUMP AT THE GAS PUMP, URGES ELECTED OFFICIALS TO GET CREATIVE IN KEEPING COSTS DOWN

With gas prices soaring over $4.00 a gallon in the Hudson Valley this week, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is once again calling on its membership and the community at large to join in petitioning federal elected officials to stop the price jump at the gas pump.  Interested parties can register their concern electronically at www.dcrcoc.org and have their voices heard by President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, House Speaker John Boehner, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Nan Hayworth, Rep. Chris Gibson, and Rep. Maurice Hinchey.

The recent spike in gas prices threatens to derail the fragile economic recovery in the Hudson Valley and beyond.  With the understanding that rising energy costs are a catalyst for all price increases, the Chamber is urging elected officials to get creative and be proactive about finding ways to control costs.

“Now is not the time for inaction or partisan bickering,” said Chamber President and CEO Charles North.  “We understand that this is a very complicated issue, but we need to immediately see both sides of the aisle working together to help ease the burden on businesses and taxpayers in the state of New York.”

According to the Oil Price Information Service on February 29, New York State has an average price per gallon of $3.97, which ranks as the fourth highest in the nation.  The national average currently stands at $3.73 per gallon.  Prices in the Empire State are higher for a number of reasons, including the increased cost of the blend of petroleum required to meet state environmental standards, how gasoline is taxed, and more.

“Ideally we’d see gas prices go down across the board,” North said.  “But even getting New York prices down to closer to the national average would be a big help for our region economically.  There’s a lot of ways to attack the problem, and I hope we’ll see action soon.”

Founded in 1907, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is committed to the growth and development of local businesses and the economy.  For more information about Chamber happenings, the complete events calendar, or to find out how they might best serve as an advocate for you and your business, please visit www.dcrcoc.org.
