SUNY ORANGE ADDS TWO NEW FACES TO ADMISSIONS STAFF
Rohan Howell is Director of Admissions and Recruitment
Shawn Cheatham to be Admissions Community Liaison
SUNY Orange has recently added two new faces to its admissions staff, hiring Rohan Howell as director of admissions and recruitment, and Shawn Cheatham as admissions community liaison.
Howell arrives at SUNY Orange after having spent the past year as senior associate director of admissions at Montclair State University. In his new role, he will oversee the College’s entire admissions and student recruitment program. This past fall, SUNY Orange’s enrollment grew by 1.1 percent to an unprecedented 7,302 students, marking the 11th consecutive year that the College’s student headcount has risen.
Having earned a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and post-master’s certificate at Dowling College, Howell brings 11 years of admissions experience to SUNY Orange. He worked in various capacities in the Dowling Admissions Office while pursuing his master’s degree, eventually rising to associate director of admissions/recruitment. In 2007 he left Dowling to become assistant dean of admissions at SUNY Stony Brook Southampton. He served as Southampton’s acting dean of admissions from September 2008 to August 2010 before accepting his post at Montclair State.
Howell, who is pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership, also served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Dowling from 2000 to 2007.
A resident of New Windsor, Cheatham will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with community agencies and organizations, as well as local school districts, throughout Orange County in order to promote the educational opportunities available at SUNY Orange. He will also participate in a college readiness program for students at Newburgh Free Academy.
Cheatham brings a blend of technology and teaching experience to his new post. He has worked as a long-term substitute technology teacher at Middletown High School, part-time A+ Certification instructor for Orange-Ulster BOCES, and a computer teacher and educational technology coordinator for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Before entering the education field, he was a network operator for IBM and a system distribution engineer/LAN administrator for Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic).
He earned an associate’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary College, and a master’s from DeVry University. Cheatham has begun work toward a doctorate degree in information technology from Capella University. He will be headquartered at the College’s Newburgh campus.
