Ulster County Executive Mike Hein recognized and commended officials from the Town and Village of Saugerties and members of the Saugerties Bicentennial Committee today at a press conference held in the Tourism Information Room at the County Office Building. Surrounded by historical artifacts, photos and Saugerties memorabilia, the County Executive praised everyone involved in the efforts to celebrate Saugerties’ 200th anniversary.
“The people of Saugerties have done an exceptional job planning events and activities that show incredible pride in their community,” said county Executive Hein “They have planned a year’s worth of activities and events that are sure to attract residents as well as visitors to their town.”

Some of the celebratory event activities and exhibits include the current display in the Tourism Information Room at 244 Fair Street, Kingston N.Y. The Exhibit, “ Celebrate Saugerties: 200 Years of Community” features old photos and postcards of many parts of Saugerties that look remarkably the same today as they did more than 100 years ago. Other highlights include a May 21, Saugerties Stone House Tours featuring homes that existed in 1811; the Memorial Day weekend encampment of the 3rd Ulster militia at Kiersted House; and the return of Old Timers Day in August.
The origin of the Town of Saugerties dates back to April 27, 1677, when New York Governor Andros signed an agreement with the Esopus Indian Kaelcop, Chief of the Amorgarickakan Family, to purchase the land which is now Saugerties.
