On Wednesday August 14 at approximately 12:25pm City of Newburgh Police received a report of burglary in progress at a Mill St. residence.

When patrol officers arrived they observed that several members of the public had physically detained 24 year old Town of Newburgh resident Michael Burke. Officers were also directed towards 49 year old Town of New Windsor resident Bruce Lawrence who was running down Mill Street. He was stopped by officers and found to be in possession of a jar containing change and several tools, all of which were determined to have been taken from the residence.

An investigation determined that the subjects entered the residence by removing an air conditioner from a rear window. They entered, stole items and then left through the front door when they were confronted by the citizens.

The residence was not occupied at the time of the crime.

Both subjects were charged with Burglary in the second degree.

Lawrence was also charged with Possession of Burglars Tools and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.

Both suspects possessed various items including watches and phones that may have been taken in other crimes. Detectives are attempting to determine where the other property came from.
