On August 7, 2012 Port Jervis had their National Night Out Against Crime at Riverside Park which was sponsored by the Port Jervis Police Department.
“This year’s National Night Out was our largest turnout to date with over five thousand attendees,” Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden said. “I would like to thank our community and local organizations because without their support and generous donations this event would not be possible.”
National Night Out opened up with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) march from Port Jervis City Hall to Riverside Park. The march featured Port Jervis’ youth, local police officers, volunteer firefighters, EMS crews, elected officials and school administrators.
Once at Riverside Park, attendees were provided free food and beverages. Approximately 50 local organizations had tents and tables passing out information and free products about their causes. There was a K-9 demonstration by Sergeant David Campbell and K-9 Scout from the Orange County Sherriff’s Department. Other performances took place throughout the night which included local karate schools and music artists.
“The Port Jervis National Night Out Against Crime Committee did a fantastic job putting this event together and I thank them for all of their hard work,” Mayor Russell Potter said. “This event has become so popular in Port Jervis because it promotes unity and safety in our city.”
National Night Out is an event that communities all over the United States have been participating in for over 20 years. The objective behind this event is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness while strengthening relationships among residents and with their local police departments and other local organizations.
