Monticello police have arrested a Sullivan County man for using a stolen credit card. Anthony J. Morelli of Monticello was charged with felony criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree and misdemeanor unlawful possession of personal identification information in the 3rd degree. 39 year old Morelli, who is currently on parole in New York State for a prior conviction of felony criminal possession of forged instrument, was arrested Friday, May 31.
The investigation began on May 25, 2013, when Monticello Police received a complaint from a Woodbourne woman that her car window had been smashed out and her purse had been stolen from a parked vehicle on Landfield Avenue. The victim was then alerted that a credit card inside the stolen purse had been used at an area convenient store shortly after the incident.
Monticello police were able to obtain surveillance footage from that convenience store which showed Morelli using the stolen credit card to buy $93.53 of cigarettes.
Morelli was arraigned before village of Monticello justice Josephine Finn and remanded to the Sullivan county jail without bail pending further court action. The investigation is continuing and possible additional charges are pending against Morelli.
