NFA Varsity Crew Gears Up For the 2013 SeasonJan 7th, 2013 | By HV Insider | Category: General Interest
Varsity Crew Season starts March 12, 2013 but a core group of the NFA Varsity Crew Team have been training hard since the 2012 season ended last June. And they all have the Eastern New York State Championship on their mind, one of the largest athletic events to take place in the City of Newburgh.
“As soon as Sectionals ended in June of 2012, rowers signed up for the Newburgh Rowing Club and have been with me training non-stop,” said NFA Varsity Head Coach Ed Kennedy. “At this point, we’re off the water, but I have a large contingent training hard on our 30 indoor ergometers (rowing machines) at our Boathouse, which is about 6,000 square feet.”
“We all worked hard to get our team back, and now we are training hard for crew season,” said Amanda McKnight, a member of the NFA Varsity Crew Team, whose boat took home a first place medal at Eastern NYS last year, although the Bay Shore Crew Team won overall in the division that NFA Varsity Crew rows in. “We really want our team to win the Eastern New York State Championship, which takes place in Newburgh.”
“The Eastern New York State Public High School Championship is the largest athletic event to take place in the City of Newburgh, by far”, said Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo. “It is a huge undertaking for the team and the parents and coaches. Preparations are already underway. Each year, we host well over 1,000 people at our Boathouse on the Newburgh Waterfront on the Hudson River, and feed them. People are not aware that Newburgh hosts of one of the largest sporting events around. It would mean a lot to the coaches and rowers to take back that trophy this year.”
“Some of our rowers are cross training by participating in other sports right now,” said Coach Kennedy,”and many others are down at the Boathouse three times a week training hard. Any delays in preparing for crew season, are dangerous. There is no substitute for victory.”
