As reported first by Hudson Valley Insider on our Facebook page, last evening a fatal accident occurred in the City of Newburgh involving a train and pedestrian.
The incident was first reported to City of Newburgh Police at approxiametly 6:00 PM Tuesday evening. Eye witnessess told police that a young man was on a cell phone pacing back and forth near the Washington Street crossing entering into Gull Harbor, adjacent to Gully’s parking lot, when he stepped in front of an oncoming train.
The CSX line train was unable to stop and struck the man, who is only being identified at this time as a Newburgh resident.
Police investigators were still on scene as night fell Tuesday with the CSX train still positioned on the tracks where it came to a stop some 50 yards from the initial spot of the incident.
The name of the victim has not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
City of Newburgh Police were assisted at the scene by City of Newburgh Firefighters and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
