Newburgh Man In Standoff With Police In Liberty Street HomeDec 5th, 2012 | By HV Insider | Category: Featured Articles, Lead Article
The older brother of a man shot by police earlier this year is in a standoff with City of Newburgh police this morning in a Liberty Street home.
Gofford Lembhard, is said to wanted by police on attempted murder charges and has barricaded himself in a two-story house on Liberty Street between Henry and Courtney Avenues. He is reportedly holding four others hostage, including two other brothers, a young niece and girlfriend of one of his brothers.
The episode unfolded after Lembhard did not show up to face the charges of attempted murder. US Marshalls are also on scene but their role is not known at this time. The charges are the result of an incident several weeks ago when Lembhard is accused of firing a gun into a car and nearby building.
Although family members say Lebmhard is not armed, police do not for sure. Family members added that the police kicked in the front door early Wednesday morning but before he could be placed under arrest, ran to the back area of the home, where it is believed he remains at this time.
