Oct 7th, 2013 | By | Category: Community Calendar

Ulster County Sheriff’s Office will be sponsoring a New York State Young Operators and Adult Certification Course for snowmobiles.  It is offered free of charge and takes place on consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the locations specified:  October 26, Tillson Firehouse, 5 Tillson Rd., Tillson; November 2, West Hurley Firehouse, 24 Wall Street, West Hurley;  and November 9, Milton Fire District, 21 Main St., Milton.

The course is required for riders between the ages of 10 and 17 by New York State law and is suggested for riders of all ages.  The intent of the course is to instruct young snowmobilers in proper riding habits, safety equipment, and laws and rules of the trail. It further teaches the history of snowmobiling and the components of a snowmobile. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation: Bureau of Marine and Recreational Vehicles prescribes this course.  Training is by certified instructors with more than 50 years of combined experience snowmobiling in both the U.S. and Canada.

Anyone interested in enrolling oneself or one’s child should contact the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office at (845) 340-3803.  A parent or guardian must accompany a child to the first class to sign a state-required permission form.

This course is part of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office youth-oriented training to make recreational sports safer.

Co-sponsoring the course are the TT Trailblazers Snowmobile Club of Rosendale, NY; the Fire Departments of Tillson, West Hurley and Milton; Arctic Adventures, Antonio’s Pizzeria of Rosendale, Kirky’s Deli of Milton, Hannaford Stores, Stewart’s Shops, and United Parcel Service.
