MONTICELLO POLICE ARREST TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY AND ASSAULT
Monticello police arrested 19 year old Jose Santos of Liberty on Tuesday September 4, 2012 and 20 year old Tyler Shafarsky of Neversink on Wednesday September 5, 2012. Both defendants were charged with felonies for robbery in the 2nd degree, assault in the 2nd degree, grand larceny in the 4th degree and misdemeanor petit larceny.
Santos and Shafarsky were arrested following an investigation into the assault and robbery of a 26 year-old Hurleyville man. The incident began 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at a residence on St. John Street in the village of Monticello where the victim and defendants were socializing together. The victim was assaulted and robbed of his cell phone, a credit card and bracelet. The victim was then taken in a vehicle to a secluded location in the Town of Fallsburg. Once at that location the defendants once again assaulted the victim. The victim was picked up and slammed to the ground and then repeatedly punched, kicked and struck with a belt buckle across his head and body. The victim was eventually released after the second assault.
The victim sought treatment at Catskill Regional Medical Center where he was treated for multiple bruises, cuts, contusions and broken ribs.
Both Santos and Shafarsky were remanded to the Sullivan County Jail without bail pending further court action.
An investigation is continuing with possible additional charges pending against the defendants.
