MONTICELLO MAN ARRESTED FOR FELONY ASSAULT AND ATTEMPTED RAPE
Monticello police arrested Cordell Smith (48) of Monticello on Friday June 8, 2012. Smith was charged with felonies for assault in the 2nd degree, attempted rape in the 1st degree, strangulation in the 1st degree and unlawful imprisonment in the 1st degree. He was also charged with misdemeanors for resisting arrest and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree.
At 5:00 am that morning Monticello police responded to a report of an assault in progress in a residence at the Shaker Heights apartment complex in the village of Monticello. Upon the arrival of Sgt. Daniel Oldfield and po Michael Davis they could hear a 42 year-old female screaming for help as smith who was an acquaintance was actively assaulting her. Officers were forced to kick in the front door of the apartment. Upon gaining entry smith was observed striking and beating the victim with his fists. Smith disregarded the officer’s verbal commands to stop assaulting the victim. Police officer Davis then utilized a taser to stop the assault and subdue smith. The victim was transported to CRMC. by mobile medic ambulance for serious facial injuries. Further investigation showed that smith had beaten and choked the victim for nearly an hour. Smith had also attempted to sexually assault her. Smith was also found to be in possession of a crack pipe.
Smith was arraigned arraignment in the village of Monticello justice court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail on $50,000 bail.
