Middletown Police shot and killed a man they said was chasing another man with a knife.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon outside of Sam’s Food Stores on Academy Avenue about 3:30 PM.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the man didn’t have any identification on him at the time of the shooting. Police have identified the victim as 25 year old Lennord Whittle of Middletown.

Police tried to revive the man after he was shot, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries near 6:00 PM.

The two officers who involved each have more than five years on the force. They have been placed on paid administrative leave while state police and the DA’s office investigate.

Witnesses, including the man being chased, were still being interviewed Tuesday night, but an initial investigation revealed the two men appear to have been involved in a dispute. The chase took place both inside and outside the store.

As more details of the incident are released Hudson Valley Insider will update the story.

  1. Glad to hear the officers weren’t hurt. Hopefully Al Sharpton can’t generate a ghetto lottery ticket from the deceased.
