LOCAL LEADERS DISCUSS SCHOOL SAFETY ISSUES

Orange County Executive Ed Diana, NYS Senator William J. Larkin, Jr. and Orange County Sheriff Carl DuBois met Thursday with Terrence Olivo, Chief Operating Officer of Orange-Ulster BOCES and several local Superintendents of Schools to review the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy and to establish a framework for a subsequent meeting that will include administration officials from local school districts, local law enforcement and the Orange County Police Advisory Board.

In moving the process forward the group agreed to the following basic principles for the subsequent meeting in January.

  • While we believe our schools are safe and secure, recent events remind us that safety plans are living documents that are appropriately addressed and updated on a regular basis.
  • Because effective school safety extends beyond the school house and is community based – effective plans require a partnership between Law Enforcement, State and Local Government, and local School Districts.

Following the January 10th meeting, at the Orange County Emergency Management Center the working group will issue a series of suggestions that will include potential legislation as well as interim steps that schools and communities may wish to consider .
