The Village of Liberty Police Department arrested Phillip Edwards, 27 of Liberty NY on a warrant issued by the New York State Division of Parole.
Officers located Edwards outside of his residence and after failing to comply with verbal commands Edwards physically resisted being arrested by the officers and had to be subdued with the use of a taser. After the taser was deployed Phillips was taken into custody without further incident. Phillips was additionally charged with resisting arrest, a misdemeanor and was arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court and remanded to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
The Village of Liberty Police Department acquired electronic control devices (Tasers) in August of this year with the use of forfeited drug money and through donations of local business. Chief of Police Scott Kinne stated, “We implemented the use of tasers to better equip our officers and to reduce injuries to both officers and arrested persons.” Friday’s incident was the first time since the department acquired tasers that an individual was tased while resisting arrest.
