Letter to the Editor

I am issuing an appeal to the four legislators who represent the Town and City of Newburgh in the Orange County Legislature (Leigh Benton, James Kulisek, Curlie Dillard and Mike Anagnostakis) and to County Executive Steve Neuhaus to please resist all efforts to close the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices in Newburgh.

As a cost saving measure, this proposal is penny wise and pound foolish. Rather than travel fifty miles round trip to Middletown to conduct business, most residents of the Newburgh area will find it far more convenient and closer to report to the DMV offices in Beacon, Wappingers Falls or Poughkeepsie, or even Kingston. The revenue generated will be lost by Orange County and revert to Dutchess or Ulster The Newburgh area has the highest concentration of senior’s citizens in the region. These are the people the least likely to conduct business on line or via the internet. The downtown area of the City of Newburgh is economically depressed, with its residents the least able to afford to travel. Furthermore there is no question that the DMV office in Newburgh has been an economic boom to the neighborhood. Moving out and leaving the building vacant would be a psychological blow to a community struggling to make a comeback.

This suggestion was ill considered. On behalf of all the residents of northeastern Orange County, I urge you to reject this proposal.
