Detectives from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the deaths of two Town of Wawarsing residents found in their home from an apparent murder-suicide.

On Wednesday July 3, 2013 just after 7:30 PM, deputies responded to 40 Dellenbaugh Road in the Hamlet of Cragsmoor for a welfare check of Paul W. McCombs, 62, and his wife, Sharon K. McCombs, 61, both of that address. After a concerned out of town relative said the couple hadn’t been heard from in over 24 hours. Upon arrival, deputies found both McCombs dead inside their residence.

Preliminary investigation indicated Paul McCombs sustained two gunshot wounds to his head, inflicted by Sharon McCombs, using a small caliber handgun. It is believed that Sharon McCombs then ingested an undetermined quantity of prescription medications.

At this time, the investigation does not indicate there were other victims or participants in this incident. The investigation remains active with additional leads being pursued, pending autopsy examinations and toxicology results.

An autopsy was being conducted on Friday morning but at this time the results are not yet known.

According to reports gathered from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, there was a history of domestic violence, in which Sharon McCombs was arrested as the aggressor on more than one occassion over the course of the past couple years.

Deputies were assisted by the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit and members of the NYSP Ellenville Barracks.
