A contractor cleaning out a vacant home in the Town of Poughkeepsie found more than he expected. Around 5:00 PM Friday the contractor discovered what appeared to be human remains in the basement of 720 Vassar Road.
Police say the sealed container was found behind a false wall in the home of James Nichols, who died in December at age 82.
Nichols wife JoAnn Nichols, 55 at the time, was reported missing December 21, 1985. A police investigation followed, but JoAnn Nichols was never found. Town of Poughkeepsie Police Chief Thomas Muaro said the case remained opened and was reviewed each year.
The remains have not been identified at the time of this article. The Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s office is working in conjunction with Town of Poughkeepsie Police. An autopsy is pending.
