New York State Police continue to investigate human remains that were found in in a swampy area in the Town of Newburgh. A trapper reported seeing the remains while hunting in an area just off Route 17K.

Officials said they had not made a positive identification but that the remains were human.

Right away speculation was made that they may be that of 23 year old Stephen Croushure who had disappeared in the area last March.

At that time police searched the woods along with K-9 units and firefighters but were unable to locate Croushore.

Because of the condition of the remains the forensic work will take some time. They will be sent to the medical examiner’s office for proper identification.
