JAMES HOLMES, THE 24-YEAR-OLD EX-DOCTORATE STUDENT ACCUSED OF KILLING 12 PEOPLE AND INJURING 58 OTHERS AT A COLORADO MOVIE THEATER PURCHASED A RIFLE HE USED IN LAST FRIDAY MORNING’S MASSACRE AFTER FAILING AN IMPORTANT ORAL EXAM WHICH WAS PART OF HIS STUDIES IN NEUROSCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO. ACCORDING TO A DENVER T-V STATION, HOLMES MADE THAT PURCHASE JUST HOURS
AFTER FLUNKING THAT ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE SEVENTH OF JUNE, BY WHICH TIME HOLMES WAS ALREADY WELL ON THE WAY TOWARD BUILDING THE ARSENAL HE IS ALLEGED TO HAVE USED AT THE CENTURY 16 MULTIPLEX DURING A MIDNIGHT PREMIERE SHOWING OF “BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.” DENVER’S K-M-G-H ALSO IS REPORTING THAT HOLMES ABRUPTLY DROPPED OUT OF THE U. OF COLORADO’S NEUROSCIENCES PROGRAM JUST THREE DAYS AFTER FAILING THAT EXAMINATION AND BUYING A RIFLE. AS THE SHOOTING TRAGEDY APPROACHES ITS ONE WEEK ANNIVERSARY, SOME EXPERTS ARE OFFERING THEORIES ABOUT WHAT MAY HAVE BROUGHT ABOUT THE MENTAL STATE EXHIBITED BY THE ORANGE-AND-RED-HAIRED SUSPECT. ONE SUSPECTS A POSSIBLE ONSET OF SCHIZOPHRENIA BROUGHT ON BY THE FAILURE OF HOLMES TO PASS THAT ORAL EXAM.

NEW YORK’S SENIOR SENATOR CHARLES SCHUMER WAS ONE OF SEVERAL DEMOCRATS PRESENT AT A CAPITOL HILL NEWS CONFERENCE TUESDAY WHO ARE PLANNING A SYMBOLIC VOTE OF THEIR OWN ON TAXES. DEMOCRATS MAY HAVE THE MAJORITY IN THAT BODY, BUT IT APPEARS THEY DON’T HAVE THE FILIBUSTER-PROOF 60 VOTE MAJORITY NEEDED TO ADVANCE LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PRESERVE TAX CUTS FOR EVERYONE BUT THOSE IN THE VERY HIGHEST TAX BRACKETS. FOR THEIR PART G-O-P SENATORS ARE DOING PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING, DRAMATICALLY BLASTING THEIR OPPONENTS AND ALLEGING THAT THEY WANT TO PUSH THE COUNTRY OFF A CLIFF SO TO SPEAK, AS IN THE CLOSING SCENE FROM THELMA AND LOUISE, A FILM REFERENCE IN FACT USED BY KENTUCKY’S MITCH MCCONNELL, THE LEADING MEMBER OF THE SENATE’S MINORITY REPUBLICANS.

SIX STOREFRONTS WERE BROKEN AND FIVE PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED BY POLICE IN ANAHEIM CALIFORNIA WHERE PROTESTS OVER OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTINGS THERE ARE CAUSING TENSIONS BETWEEN POLICE AND CITIZENS TO FLARE UP. FIVE DEATHS AT THE HANDS OF POLICE HAVE OCCURRED SO FAR THIS YEAR IN ANAHEIM. THE SHOOTING OF AN UNARMED MAN WHO WAS ALSO A SUSPECTED GANG MEMBER OVER THE WEEKEND WAS THE LAST
STRAW FOR PEOPLE WHO CLAIM BRUTALITY BY LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE CITY THAT’S THE LARGEST IN CALIFORNIA’S ORANGE COUNTY WHICH IS HOME TO ALMOST AS MANY PEOPLE AS THERE ARE IN ORANGE COUNTY NEW YORK.

ORANGE COUNTY’S LEGISLATURE IS KEEPING BUSY WITH NOT ONLY THE PRESS OF BUSINESS BEFORE REGULAR COMMITTEES THAT HAPPENS ON A MONTHLY BASIS BUT THE DUAL INVESTIGATIONS THAT HOPE TO SHED LIGHT ON MATTERS OF BOTH THE EMPTY GOVERNMENT CENTER BUILDING WHERE THE QUESTION IS WHETHER TO “JUST FIX IT” OR BUILD A NEW ONE AND THE VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME; IT’S BEING READIED FOR SALE TO A PRIVATE OWNER. THE ADDITIONAL BURDEN OF BOTH PROBES ON COUNTY COFFERS IS BEING NOTED AS LEGISLATURE CHAIR MICHAEL PILMEIER AND LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL ANTIONETTE REED WILL ONCE AGAIN MAKE OFFICIAL A REQUEST FOR A SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATION TO THIS YEAR’S BUDGET IN ORDER TO COVER LEGAL FEES PLUS FEES FOR STENOGRAPHERS AS WALL AS OTHER COSTS AND DISBURSEMENTS MADE NECESSARY BY THE WORK OF BOTH INVESTIGATIVE PANELS. THE ACTUAL HARD NUMBERS WON’T BE APPARENT RIGHT AWAY, BUT THE PARALLEL PROBES ARE SET TO WRAP UP THEIR BUSINESS IN A LITTLE OVER MONTH FROM NOW, IN EARLY SEPTEMBER. WHAT WAS TERMED A GENERAL WORK SESSION FOR THE GOVERNMENT CENTER PANEL HAPPENED TUESDAY MORNING WHILE THE VALLEY VIEW PANEL FOLLOWS SUIT WITH A SIMILAR GATHERING OF THEIR OWN AT TEN A.M. TODAY.

ORANGE COUNTY’S COUNTY ATTORNEY ALONG WITH THE SPECIAL COUNSEL RETAINED BY THE OFFICE OF EXECUTIVE ED DIANA ARE ONCE AGAIN PREPARED TO DENY REQUESTS THAT DIANA AND OTHER CERTAIN KEY WITNESSES TESTIFY UNDER OATH BEFORE THE COMMITTEE OF LEGISLATORS CHARGED WITH FINDING ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON WITH THE VACANT GOVERNMENT CENTER BUILDING. EVER SINCE HURRICANE IRENE AND TROPICAL STORM LEE FURTHER DAMAGED A STRUCTURE ALREADY IN NEED OF REPAIR, THE EXECUTIVE HAS STATED THAT THE BUILDING WILL NEVER BE OCCUPIED AGAIN ON HIS WATCH. THOSE CONCERNS ABOUT SAFETY, HOWEVER, HAVE ALSO EFFECTIVELY PREVENTED COUNTY LAWMAKERS AND OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE PROBE FROM INSPECTING THE CONDITION OF THE BUILDING. WHEN WITNESSES ARE CALLED TO GIVE TESTIMONY UNDER OATH AT HEARINGS WHICH BEGIN THIS COMING MONDAY, ALL INDICATIONS ARE THAT DIANA AMONG OTHERS WILL NOT COMPLY WITH SUBPOENAS ON GROUNDS THAT THEY NOT INCRIMINATE OR PERJURE THEMSELVES, MUCH LIKE WHAT HAPPENED AT HEARINGS OF THE LEGISLATURE’S PANEL LOOKING INTO THE VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME WHICH TOOK PLACE EARLIER THIS MONTH.

ACCORDING TO MIDDLETOWN POLICE A CITY WOMAN IS SAID TO BE IN STABLE CONDITION AT WESTCHESTER MEDICAL CENTER AFTER SHE WAS BITTEN SEVERAL TIMES BY HER OWN DOG, A BRINDLE COLORED PIT BULL TERRIER YESTERDAY MORNING. AS POLICE TELL THE STORY, THE WOMAN WAS ATTEMPTING TO PLACE HER ANIMAL INSIDE AN OUTDOOR ENCLOSURE OF ONE SORT OR ANOTHER WHEN THE DOG ATTACKED. THE VICTIM WAS BITTEN SEVERAL TIMES ON HER ARM, WRIST AND ABDOMEN. BYSTANDERS AT THE SCENE WERE NOT ABLE TO REMOVE THE DOG FROM HER OWNER AND POLICE OFFICERS TRIED TO DO THE SAME, AND SUCCEEDED BUT ONLY AFTER THE DOG CHARGED AN OFFICER AND WAS SHOT AND KILLED. A STATE POLICE HELICOPTER AIRLIFTED THE BITE VICTIM TO THE WESTCHESTER HOSPITAL. HER IDENTITY AS WELL AS THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE ATTACK ARE NOT YET BEING DISCLOSED BY POLICE.

IN A RELATED STORY, NOT TWENTY-FOUR HOURS AFTER THAT ATTACK MIDDLETOWN COMMON COUNCIL VOTED TO PASS A PROPOSED LAW THAT WOULD REQUIRE RENTERS IN THE CITY TO OBTAIN AND CARRY INSURANCE ON DOGS OF VARIOUS BREEDS WEIGHING 30 OR MORE POUNDS. THE IDEA IS TO HELP CONTROL AND PREVENT DOG ATTACKS SUCH AS THE ONE THAT HAPPENED TUESDAY MORNING IN THE CITY. INCIDENTS OF DOG ATTACKS  HAVE ONLY INCREASED IN NUMBER OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.
