PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS REACTED TO A STATEMENT BY SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR AL-ASSAD TO THE EFFECT THAT HIS REGIME WOULD USE CHEMICAL WEAPONS AGAINST ANY POTENTIAL FOREIGN ATTACKERS, OBAMA SAYING THAT ANY SUCH MOVE WOULD BE A “TRAGIC MISTAKE.” THAT VIEW HAS ALSO BEEN EXPRESSED BY OTHERS INCLUDING U-N SECRETARY GENERAL BAN KI-MOON. IN SYRIA RIGHT NOW, FIGHTING CONTINUES IN DAMASCUS AND IN THE NORTHERN COMMERCIAL CENTER OF ALEPPO, WHERE OPPOSITION REBELS ARE CURRENTLY ON THE OFFENSIVE.

EMOTIONS COULD NOT BE CONTAINED IN A COLORADO COURTROOM MONDAY AS SOME FAMILY MEMBERS OF VICTIMS FROM A MASS SHOOTING IN A SUBURBAN DENVER MOVIE THEATER WERE PRESENT IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE SUSPECT CHARGED AS THE SHOOTER WHO KILLED 12 AND WOUNDED 58 PATRONS OF THE MULTIPLEX WHERE THE NEW BATMAN FEATURE WAS PREMIERING EARLY FRIDAY. 24-YEAR-OLD JAMES HOLMES WAS UNSHAVEN, GLASSY-EYED AND HAD HIS HAIR DYED SHADES OF BRIGHT ORANGE AND RED AS HE SAT IN THE COURTROOM FOR THIE FIRST OF WHAT WILL LIKELY BE MANY MORE APPEARANCES. FORMAL CHARGES AGAINST HOLMES WON’T BE COMING UNTIL MONDAY AS THE PROSECUTION OF HIS CASE MOVES FORWARD. TOM TEVES, WHO LOST A SON REFERRED TO THE ALLEGED SHOOTER HOLMES AS A “COWARD.” TEVES WAS QUOTED AS TELLING THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THAT SOMEONE HAD TO BE PRESENT IN THE COURTROOM TO ASK OF HOLMES WHY HE WENT INTO THE THEATER WITH GUNS AND BALLISTIC PROTECTION AND SHOT A 6-YEAR-OLD CHILD BUT DID NOT ENGAGE POLICE IN A GUN BATTLE ONCE COPS CONFRONTED HIM.

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY ATTACKING OPPONENT MITT ROMNEY FOR THE TIME HE SPENT AS HEAD OF PRIVATE EQUITY FIRM BAIN CAPITOL. AND SOME FINDINGS FROM A NEW REUTERS/IPSOS POLL INDICATED THAT THE ATTACKS SEEM TO BE WORKING FOR MR. OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN. FULLY ONE-THIRD OF VOTERS SURVEYED WHO ARE REGISTERED AS REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS OR INDEPENDENTS SAY THAT THE THINGS THEY’D HEARD ABOUT ROMNEY’S TAX RECORDS AND HIS TENURE AT BAIN HAD NEGATIVELY AFFECTED THEIR IMPRESSIONS OF THE REPUBLICAN EX-GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS. THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS FOR ROMNEY TO BE FOUND, HOWEVER. WHEN POLLED ON WHO HAS A PREFERRED PLAN, POLICY OR APPROACH FOR FIXING THE NATION’S ECONOMY, RESPONDENTS FAVORED ROMNEY OVER OBAMA BY 5 PERCENTAGE POINTS.

IT’S BACK TO WORK TODAY FOR THE COMMITTEE OF ORANGE COUNTY LEGISLATORS WHO ARE PREPARING FOR HEARINGS NEXT WEEK ON THE ISSUE OF THE GOVERNMENT CENTER. AT THE END OF MAY, LAWMAKERS ESTABLISHED TWO PANELS FOR THE PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATING BOTH THE SALE OF THE VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME AND THE DILEMMA THE COUNTY FACES OVER THE STATE OF THE GOVERNMENT CENTER BUILDING, VACANT SINCE HURRICANE IRENE AND TROPICAL STORM LEE LAST SUMMER. IF THE VALLEY VIEW COMMITTEE’S HEARINGS OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS ARE ANY INDICATION, THERE WILL PROBABLY NOT BE MUCH, IF ANY COOPERATION FROM THE COUNTY EXECUTIVE’S OFFICE IN COMPLYING WITH SUBPOENAS FOR SWORN TESTIMONY. A LACK OF CREDIBLE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ACTUAL VERSUS STATED COSTS OF BOTH OPERATING VALLEY VIEW AND DEALING WITH THE DAMAGED GOVERNMENT CENTER WAS WHAT PROMPTED COUNTY LAWMAKERS TO SET UP THE FACT-FINDING PANELS IN THE FIRST PLACE. BUT AS FAR AS TESTIMONY FROM THE EXECUTIVE IS CONCERNED, DIANA AND OTHERS IN HIS OFFICE HAVE SOUGHT WAYS TO EVADE THE QUESTIONS THE PANEL WANTS ANSWERED UNDER OATH IN THE VALLEY VIEW PROBE AND MAY BE PREPARING TO DO THE SAME WITH THE GOVERNMENT CENTER PROBE AS WELL. TODAY’S WORK SESSION BEGINS AT TEN; THE GOVERNMENT CENTER PANEL’S FIRST HEARING IS SET FOR NEXT MONDAY. THE VALLEY VIEW PANEL HOLDS ANOTHER WORK SESSION TOMORROW.

THE ORANGE COUNTY SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT IS IN LINE TO RECEIVE 189-THOUSAND, 250 DOLLARS AS AN INSTALLMENT IN THE LATEST ROUND OF FUNDING TO HELP PREVENT HARMFUL AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF FROM AREA FARMS. SIXTEEN OF THEM IN THE COUNTY WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS LATEST GRANT FROM ALBANY, PART OF MORE THAN 10-POINT-SIX (M) MILLION DOLLARS BEING DISBURSED THIS TIME OUT.

TROOPERS SAY WILENKEN COLLECTED FOR SEVEN MONTHS DURING EACH OF THOSE TWO YEARS WHILE HE WAS EMPLOYED.
