ONE OF THE LATEST REPORTS COMING FROM OPPOSITION ACTIVISTS IN SYRIA SAYS THAT FOURTEEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED BY SHELLING AND GUNFIRE IN THE TOWNS OF MISRABA AND RIHAN, BOTH OF WHICH ARE NOT FAR AWAY FROM DOUMA. THAT COMMUNITY LOCATED NORTH OF THE CAPITOL DAMASCUS HAS BECOME VIRTUALLY UNINHABITED AND IS LITTERED WITH CORPSES AFTER SUSTAINED BOMBARDMENT BY FORCES LOYAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR AL ASSAD. REUTERS IS SAYING THAT VIDEO SHOT BY OPPOSITION ACTIVISTS IN DOUMA SHOWS GORY SCENES OF WHAT’S BEEN LEFT BEHIND AFTER GOVERNMENT FORCES POUNDED DOUMA WITH REPEATED ARTILLERY ATTACKS WHICH HAVE CAUSED THE REBELS OF THE FREE SYRIAN ARMY TO FLEE. THE OFFICIAL SYRIAN NEWS AGENCY IS MAKING NO MENTION OF THE KILLINGS IN DOUMA AND ELSEWHERE, CHOOSING INSTEAD TO FOCUS ON DAMAGE TO UTILITIES AND CLAIMING THAT PEOPLE HAVE LEFT THE AREA DUE TO WHAT IS ONCE AGAIN BEING LABELLED AS “TERRORISM.”

THREE CHILDREN HAVE DIED AND 24 OTHER PASSENGERS OF A YACHT OFF THE COAST OF LONG ISLAND WERE RESCUED WHEN THE CRAFT CAPSIZED WEDNESDAY NIGHT. ALL THOSE ABOARD HAD HOPED TO TAKE IN A JULY FOURTH FIREWORKS DISPLAY WHEN THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED.

IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, THE PERIOD AROUND JULY FOURTH — WHICH WAS YESTERDAY — IS WHEN THE ALL-STAR BREAK HAPPENS DURING THE MID-POINT OF THE REGULAR SEASON. BUT IT’S ALSO PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN SEASON ACROSS AMERICA, AND THERE’S NO BREAK IN THE ACTION OR THE RHETORIC FROM BOTH THE ROMNEY AND OBAMA CAMPAIGNS. MITT ROMNEY’S HEALTH CARE REFORMS IMPLEMENTED DURING HIS TIME AS GOVERNOR IN MASSACHUSETTS HAVE LONG BEEN CITED AS A BASIC BLUEPRINT FOR WHAT MOST REPUBLICANS DERISIVELY REFER TO NOW AS “OBAMACARE,” THE HEALTH CARE INITIATIVE SPEARHEADED BY PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA KNOWN OFFICIALLY AS THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. ROMNEY HAS SPOKEN OUT ABOUT THE SUPREME COURT RULING LAST WEEK WHICH UPHELD THE CONSITITUTIONALITY OF THAT MEASURE SIGNED INTO LAW BY THE PREISDENT TWO YEARS AGO. REPUBLICANS FAR AND WIDE HAVE LAMBASTED CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS FOR HIS STANCE IN SUPPORT OF THE INDIVIDUAL MANDATE BEING IN LINE WITH THE CONSTITUTION. ROMNEY IS NOW TAKING PAINS TO CALL “OBAMACARE’S” INDIVIDUAL MANDATE A TAX, WHICH ALIGNS HIM WITH OTHERS IN THE G-O-P WHO HAVE REACTED TO LAST WEEK’S RULING ON THAT SCORE. OBAMA IS KEYING IN ON TWO STATES LOCATED IN WHAT’S OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE “RUST BELT,” THOSE STATES BEING PENNSYLVANIA AND OHIO. THE KEYSTONE AND BUCKEYE STATES ARE LOCATIONS THE PRESIDENT WILL BE VISITING ON A CAMPAIGN BUS TOUR TODAY WHERE OBAMA WILL CONCENTRATE HIS EFFORTS ON WOOING BLUE-COLLAR VOTERS IN THOSE KEY BATTLEGROUNDS IN THIS YEAR’S PRESIDENTIAL RACE.

POWERING UP FOR MILLIONS OF RESIDENTS ACROSS SEVERAL STATES IN THE MID-ATLANTIC AND INTO THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS IS PROVING TO BE A SLOW PROCESS FOLLOWING HEAVY WEATHER WHICH KNOCKED OUT ELECTRIC SERVICE AT THE END OF LAST WEEK. THE STORMS THAT STRUCK THE CAROLINAS, VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA AS WELL AS OHIO CAME IN THE MIDST OF A SUMMER HEAT WAVE WHICH CONTINUES WITH TEMPERATURES TYPICALLY A FEW DEGREES SHY OF 100 FAHRENHEIT. AIR TEMPERATURES ALONG THE EASTERN SEABOARD WERE IN TRIPLE DIGIT TERRITORY A FEW DAYS AGO AND HEAT INDEX READINGS WERE 110 OR HIGHER WHEN A SERIES OF STORMS FIRED UP PACKING DAMAGING STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS OF NEARLY 100 MILES PER HOUR IN SOME CASES. AT THIS STAGE, THE BULK OF THE HALF A MILLION PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL WITHOUT POWER ARE TO BE FOUND IN THE MOUNTAIN STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA.

TIMOTHY HANDEL WAS SENTENCED TO SERVE A TERM OF FROM 27 YEARS TO LIFE FOR HIS CONVICTION ON CHARGES OF MURDER AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING IN THE DEATH OF HANDEL’S 27-YEAR-OLD DOMESTIC PARTNER KATHLEEN CONNOLLY LAST YEAR. SENTENCE WAS PASSED IN ORANGE COUNTY COURT TUESDAY ON HANDEL, WHO WAS FOUND GUILTY IN THE KILLING OF CONNOLLY AT THE CONCLUSION OF HIS TRIAL IN LATE MAY. HANDEL HAD MOVED HIMSELF AND HIS DAUGHTERS INTO A RENTED HOME IN NEW WINDSOR ONE YEAR AGO AT THE TIME WHEN CONNOLLY HAD BEEN REPORTED MISSING FROM THE COUPLE’S RESIDENCE IN LANCASTER COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA. CONNOLLY’S BODY WAS DISCOVERED IN EARLY AUGUST 2011 BURIED IN THE BACK YARD OF THE HOUSE ON RILEY ROAD AND THE 40-YEAR-OLD HANDEL WAS ARRESTED AS A SUSPECT IN HER DEATH SHORTLY AFTERWARD.

THE INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE OF ORANGE COUNTY LAWMAKERS LOOKING INTO THE MATTER OF THE GOVERNMENT CENTER BUILDING IN GOSHEN WILL ENGAGE IN A WORK SESSION NEXT FRIDAY, THE FIRST OF TWO IN PREPARATION FOR HEARINGS THAT ARE SLATED TO BEGIN AT THE END OF THIS MONTH, JULY 30TH. IT WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT TO SAY THAT THE EXECUTIVE AND THE LEGISLATURE ARE NOT OF ONE MIND ON THE SUBJECT OF WHAT TO DO WITH THE 42-YEAR-OLD LANDMARK TO BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE WHICH HAD SERVED AS THE HEADQUARTERS FOR MUCH OF THE COUNTY’S BUSINESS UNTIL IT WAS RAVAGED BY THE DELUGE WE RECEIVED DURING HURRICANE IRENE AND TROPICAL STORM LEE. SINCE THE RAINS CAME AND FURTHER DAMAGE WAS WROUGHT ON A BUILDING ALREADY IN NEED OF REPAIR, EXECUTIVE ED DIANA HAS STATED THE BUILDING WILL NOT BE OCCUPIED AGAIN BECAUSE MOLD AND OTHER RESULTING DAMAGE HAS MADE THE STRUCTURE DESIGNED BY PAUL RUDOLPH UNFIT. MEETINGS INVOLVING BOTH THE EXECUTIVE AND LAWMAKERS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES CENTER AND THE TD BANK BUILDING IN GOSHEN FOR NEARLY ELEVEN MONTHS NOW. AND A 14-POINT-SIX (M) MILLION DOLLAR BOND RESOLUTION WHICH WOULD HAVE STARTED THE PROCESS OF BUILDING A NEW GOVERNMENT CENTER AS PROPOSED BY DIANA IN MARCH FAILED TO GET THE TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY VOTE NEEDED FOR APPROVAL BY THE LEGISLATURE.

AS ANYONE WHO TRAVELS STRETCHES OF ROUTE 17 IN OUR REGION KNOWS, THERE ARE A LOT MORE VISITORS MAKING THEIR WAY FROM THE INNER CITY AND METRO AREA THROUGH ORANGE COUNTY TO SUMMERTIME DESTINATIONS IN SULLIVAN COUNTY. TURN BACK THE CLOCK 25 YEARS AND THERE WERE STILL REMNANTS OF WHAT ONCE WAS IN SULLIVAN WITH THE CONCORD AND OTHER RESORT HOTELS STILL DOING BUSINESS. DEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC CHANGES OCCURRING SINCE THEN HAVE AFFECTED THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW FLOCKING TO WHAT ONCE WAS THE BORSCHT BELT, BUT THE PEOPLE ARE STILL COMING. THE RETAIL LANDSCAPE HAS CHANGED, WITH THE WAL-MART SUPERCENTER AT EXIT 105 OUTSIDE MONTICELLO NOW THE LARGEST SINGLE SHOPPING OUTLET IN THE COUNTY. AS LOCALS IN SULLIVAN BRACE FOR THIS SUMMER’S INVASION, EVERYONE’S BREATHING A BIT EASIER WITH LAST WEEK’S NEWS THAT THE STORE HAD PASSED AN INSPECTION BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AND MARKETS AFTER OFFICIALS IN ALBANY HAD THREATENED TO SHUT DOWN PARTS OF THE WAL-MART DEALING WITH THE SALE AND PREPARATION OF FOOD. THAT THREAT LOOMED BECAUSE OF REPEATED INSTANCES OF MICE AND THEIR DROPPINGS BEING FOUND INSIDE THE BUILDING BY STATE INSPECTORS.
