PAUL RYAN WAS IN THE SPOTLIGHT IN TAMPA LAST NIGHT AT THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION. MITT ROMNEY’S VICE PRESIDENTIAL PICK, WHO LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE NAN HAYWORTH CALLS BOTH A FRIEND AND A MENTOR SPOKE AT LENGTH IN SWEEPING LANGUAGE ABOUT THE STATE OF THE NATION’S ECONOMY AND HIS PARTY’S VISION FOR HOPEFULLY FIXING IT. RYAN TALKED IN TERMS OF A CHOICE: “WHETHER TO PUT HARD LIMITS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH OR HARD LIMITS ON THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT” IN RYAN’S OWN WORDS. THE HOUSE BUDGET COMMITTEE CHAIR SAID HIS CHOICE AND THAT OF REPUBLICANS IS LIMITING THE SIZE OF GOVERNMENT. BUT THAT GOVERNMENT, HOWEVER BIG HAS BIG PROBLEMS INCLUDING THE CONTINUED SOLVENCY OF THE MEDICARE PROGRAM. AND RYAN’S SPEECH OFFERED NO SPECIFIC COMMENT OR DETAILS ABOUT THE KIND OF CUTS HE’S WILLING TO MAKE IN HIS “PATH TO PROSPERITY” BUDGETS, BOTH OF WHICH LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE HAYWORTH VOTED FOR AND BOTH DYING A QUICK DEATH IN THE SENATE.

MORE WEAKENING IS EXPECTED FROM ISAAC, THE CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE HAVING MADE LANDFALL ALONG LOUISIANA. ISAAC WAS NO KATRINA, FOR WHICH MANY PEOPLE ARE GRATEFUL. BUT ISAAC STILL PUT THE HURT ON SOUTHERN PARISHES IN THE PELICAN STATE WITH FLOODING FROM DRENCHING RAINS WHICH ALSO PUT NEW LEVEES AND OTHER POST-KATRINA FLOOD CONTROL DEVICES TO THE TEST. FLOOD PROTECTIONS FOR NEW ORLEANS PASSED THAT TEST, CRESCENT CITY MAYOR MITCH LANDRIEU SAYING THE NEW SYSTEM INSTALLED BY THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS AT A COST OF MORE THAN 14 (B) BILLION PERFORMED “EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD.” AFTER HITTING THE GULF COAST ISAAC PRODUCED STORM SURGES OF AS HIGH AS 12 FEET WHILE PACKING 80 MILE PER HOUR WINDS AND DUMPING AS MUCH AS A FOOT OR MORE OF RAIN ON THE REGION. AS THE STORM WEAKENS BACK TO TROPICAL STORM STRENGTH, SOME DROUGHT-STRICKEN LOCATIONS IN THE MID-SOUTH AND GREAT PLAINS ARE HOPING TO RECEIVE SOME OF THAT DRENCHING RAIN.

LOCAL ATTORNEY AND POLITICAL GADFLY MIKE SUSSMAN IS OUT FRONT ON MANY ISSUES IN ORANGE COUNTY. HE’S ALSO TAKEN ON LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE FAMILY OF MICHAEL LEMBHARD, THE 22-YEAR-OLD MAN SHOT DEAD BY TWO NEWBURGH CITY POLICE OFFICERS IN MARCH. MONDAY WAS THE OCCASION OF WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MICHAEL LEMBHARD’S 23RD BIRTHDAY. WEDNESDAY, SUSSMAN STATED HIS BELIEF THAT THE ARRESTS OF TWO BROTHERS OF LEMBHARD ON MONDAY WAS A FOREGONE CONCLUSION, THAT CITY COPS WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO GET INVOLVED WITH BOTH DONALD AND BASIL LEMBHARD ON THE DAY THAT ALSO MARKED A RALLY BY FAMILY AND SUPPORTERS OF THEIR DEAD BROTHER. SUSSMAN’S INVOLVEMENT IN THE CASE HELPED BRING ABOUT A REQUEST FROM CITY COUNCIL FOR AN INVESTIGATION OF MICHAEL LEMBHARD’S SHOOTING BY OFFICIALS IN ALBANY: THAT HAS BEEN DENIED. A GRAND JURY PROBE IN ORANGE COUNTY HAS EXONERATED THE TWO OFFICERS WHO SHOT AND KILLED LEMBHARD OF ANY WRONGDOING. IN JUNE, THE RESULTS OF AN AUTOPSY WHICH MAYOR JUDY KENNEDY AND OTHER NEWBURGH OFFICIALS DENIED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF SHOWED THAT MICHAEL LEMBHARD WAS STRUCK BY FIFTEEN BULLETS FIRED AT HIM BY POLICE INSIDE A RESIDENCE AT 55 LIBERTY STREET.

WHEN WILL THE BEANS BE SPILLED BY THE NEW YORK STATE D-E-C ON HYDROFRACKING? SOME SAY THE COMING LABOR DAY WEEKEND MAY BE SUCH A TIME FOR THE AGENCY TO WRAP UP MONTHS OF REVIEW AND ISSUE A SPECIFIC BLUEPRINT THAT WOULD BRING SHALE GAS EXPLORATION BY HYDRAULIC FRACTURING TO NEW YORK STATE. GOVERNOR CUOMO, WHO MUST SIGN OFF ON WHATEVER ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICIALS IN ALBANY EVENTUALLY DECIDE ON HAS BEEN FURTIVE AND COY IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS FROM THE MEDIA LATELY ON THAT SUBJECT, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE NEW YORK TIMES LEAKED A PRELIMINARY PLAN THAT WOULD LIMIT HYDROFRACKING TO SIX SOUTHERN TIER COUNTIES IN NEW YORK STATE. MEANTIME, MARK RUFFALO WHO’S BEEN A HIGH PROFILE ANTI-FRACKING ACTIVIST IS JUST ONE OF THE CELEBRITIES LENDING THEIR VOICES TO A NEW ORGANIZATION KNOWN AS ARTISTS AGAINST FRACKING, WHICH WAS LAUNCHED IN MANHATTAN WEDNESDAY AT A NEWS CONFERENCE WHERE JOHN LENNON’S WIDOW YOKO ONO AND THEIR SON SEAN LENNON BOTH SPOKE.

A MAN SAID TO BE IN HIS FORTIES DROWNED WEDNESDAY AS HE ATTEMPTED TO SWIM FROM A RAFT IN THE UPPER DELAWARE RIVER TO THE SHORE ON THE NEW YORK SIDE OF THE RIVER AT PORT JERVIS. THE RELEASE OF THE DROWNING VICTIM’S IDENTITY IS AWAITING NOTIFICATION OF THE MAN’S RELATIVES. THE METRO NEW YORK AREA MAN WAS WITH A FEMALE COMPANION IN A RAFT WHEN HE GOT INTO TROUBLE AFTER JUMPING FROM THE CRAFT INTO THE WATER WITHOUT A FLOTATION DEVICE ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES RESPONDING TO THE SCENE OF YESTERDAY’S DROWNING. IT HAPPENED JUST OFF SLEEPY HOLLOW ROAD OR WEST MAIN STREET ON THE EDGE OF PORT JERVIS.
