Headlines for June 1 2012

DURING THE FIRST THREE MONTHS OF 2012, NON-FARM PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT INCREASED ON AVERAGE BY 226-THOUSAND. BUT THAT ENCOURAGING TREND HAS SLOWED TWO MONTHS INTO THE SECOND QUARTER WITH THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS THIS MORNING RELEASING MAY EMPLOYMENT DATA. IT SHOWS THAT THE ECONOMY ADDED 69-THOUSAND JOBS FOR THE MONTH, FEWER THAN APRIL’S GAIN OF 77-THOUSAND. THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE REMAINED ESSENTIALLY UNCHANGED LAST MONTH AT EIGHT-POINT-TWO PERCENT.

A VAST WILDFIRE, THE LARGEST IN STATE HISTORY FLAMES ON IN THE SOUTHWESTERN CORNER OF  OF NEW MEXICO. AND IT’S GOING TO BE A WHILE BEFORE THE CONFLAGRATION NOW COVERING NEARLY 200-THOUSAND ACRES CAN BEGIN TO BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL. FIRE CREWS, REPORTEDLY OVER 1200 IN NUMBER ARE MAKING WHAT EFFORT THEY CAN TO TACKLE THE WHITEWATER-BALDY FIRE RAGING IN NEW MEXICO’S GILA NATIONAL FOREST NOT FAR FROM THE ARIZONA BORDER. CONDITIONS BEING WHAT THEY ARE — DRY — ACROSS MUCH OF THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES STATES, WHAT’S HAPPENING IN NEW MEXICO COULD BE A HARBINGER OF THINGS TO COME ACROSS THE REGION THIS SUMMER.

JOHN EDWARDS MAY HAVE ACTED LIKE A CAD IN HAVING AN AFFAIR WHILE HIS WIFE ELIZABETH WAS BATTLING THE CANCER THAT EVENTUALLY TOOK HER LIFE, BUT HE DID NOT BREAK THE LAW WHERE CAMPAIGN FUNDS WERE CONCERNED. THAT WAS THE CONCLUSION AT EDWARDS’ TRIAL IN GREENSBORO NORTH CAROLINA. OF THE SIX CHARGES LODGED AGAINST THE FORMER SENATOR AND PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, A VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY WAS REACHED THURSDAY ON ONE COUNT AND A MISTRIAL WAS DECLARED ON THE FIVE OTHERS. THE PUBLICITY SURROUNDING THE TRIAL WAS INTENSE, BUT IN THE END THE PROSECUTION FAILED TO MAKE A CREDIBLE CASE AGAINST EDWARDS CONCERNING ALLEGATIONS THAT HE MISUSED AROUND 1 MILLION IN CAMPAIGN MONIES FROM 2008 IN ORDER TO COVER HIS TRACKS ABOUT THE AFFAIR ATTEMPTING TO CONCEAL IT FROM BOTH HIS WIFE AND THE MEDIA. IN CLOSING ARGUMENTS, THE HEAD OF EDWARDS’ LEGAL TEAM CALLED THE CASE AGAINST HIS CLIENT ONE THAT “SHOULD DEFINE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WRONG AND A CRIME…A SIN AND A FELONY,” WHICH BECAME REFLECTED IN THE VERDICT.

THE SWIRL OF ACTIVITY OVER THE TWO BIG ISSUES BEFORE ORANGE COUNTY GOVERNMENT CONTINUES. AS FOR ONE OF THOSE BIG ISSUES, THE VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME SALE, IT’S STILL NOT CERTAIN WHETHER TIMETABLES FOR ACTION WILL BE LENGTHENED OR MODIFIED. WHAT IS CERTAIN IS THAT ANOTHER MONTHLY MEETING OF THE LEGISLATURE WILL HAPPEN THIS COMING THURSDAY, THE SEVENTH OF JUNE. THAT COULD PROVE TO BE A DAY OF DECISION OR A DAY WHEN A DECISION ON THE SALE OF THE 360-BED NURSING HOME IS DEFERRED. IN THE MEANTIME, VALLEY VIEW WILL BE THE FOCUS OF ONE INVESTIGATION BY A LEGISLATIVE PANEL. THE MEMBERSHIP OF THAT PANEL AS WELL AS ONE CHARGED WITH LOOKING INTO THE MATTER OF THE GOVERNMENT CENTER HAS BEEN SET, AND THERE ARE AN EQUAL NUMBER OF REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS TO BE FOUND ON BOTH PANELS. WHILE THOSE INVESTIGATIONS LOOK INTO THE WAY INFORMATION HAS BEEN PROVIDED OR IN SOME CASES WITHHELD BY THE EXECUTIVE DURING THE PROCESS OF DEALING WITH BOTH MATTERS, IT REMAINS UNCLEAR IF VALLEY VIEW WILL BE SHUT DOWN IF LAWMAKERS DON’T O-K ITS SALE BY THIS TIME NEXT WEEK.

THE PHRASE “WAR ON WOMEN” ENTERED THE POLITICAL LEXICON THIS YEAR AS A RESPONSE AND REACTION TO MEASURES BY REPUBLICANS IN WASHINGTON TO MAKE CHANGES IN SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT WHEREBY INSURANCE PLANS OF COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS WITH A RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION WOULD BE REQUIRED TO OFFER THEIR EMPLOYEES CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE. MANY REPUBLICANS HAVE IN TURN REACTED TO THAT REACTION, STATING THAT THE SO-CALLED “WAR ON WOMEN” IS A FALSE CLAIM MADE BY THEIR POLITICAL OPPOSITION. WAR ON WOMEN OR NOT, A SPOKESMAN FOR CONGRESSWOMAN NAN HAYWORTH’S CAMPAIGN IS DRAWING FIRE FOR SOMETHING HE SAID ON HIS FACEBOOK PAGE THIS PAST WEEKEND. JAY TOWNSEND REPLIED TO A COMMENT MADE BY A POSTER IN AN ONLINE DISCUSSION OF GAS PRICES BY POSING A QUESTION TO THE POSTER, NAMED TOM. TOWNSEND ASKED WHEN TOM, WHO HE CALLED ‘TOMMY BOY’ WAS — QUOTE — “GOING TO WEIGH IN ON ALL THE HYPOCRITES WHO CLAIM TO BE FIGHTING THE WAR ON WOMEN? LET’S HURL SOME ACID AT THOSE FEMALE DEMOCRATIC SENATORS WHO WON’T ABIDE THE MANDATES THEY WANT TO IMPOSE ON THE PRIVATE SECTOR.” THERE HAS BEEN NO COMMENT FROM HAYWORTH OR ANYONE ELSE ON HER CAMPAIGN ABOUT THE REMARK BY TOWNSEND WHICH HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED FROM HIS FACEBOOK PAGE BUT HAS SINCE REAPPEARED ON A FACEBOOK FORUM FOR DISCUSSION OF THE 19TH DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL CONTEST.

A QUINNIPIAC POLL OUT THIS WEEK FINDS ANDREW CUOMO WITH A 70 PERCENT JOB APPROVAL RATING AT THIS STAGE OF HIS FIRST TERM AS GOVERNOR. THAT SAME POLL SHOWS SENATOR KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND WITH A WIDE LEAD OVER HER REPUBLICAN CHALLENGERS AS SHE SEEKS HER FIRST FULL TERM IN OFFICE.
