THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS CONSIDERING A POSSIBLE RELEASE OF SOME OF THE NATION’S STRATEGIC OIL RESERVES IN AN EFFORT TO ADDRESS RISING PRICES AT THE PUMP, CAUSED IN PART RIGHT NOW BY REFINERY FIRES IN THE WEST AND OTHER FACTORS. ACCORDING TO REUTERS, THE WHITE HOUSE IS “DUSTING OFF OLD PLANS” TO TAP INTO THOSE PETROLEUM RESERVES IN ORDER TO HOPEFULLY MAKE A DENT IN THE RISING PRICES OF FUEL BUT ALSO KEEP THOSE INCREASED COSTS FROM UNDERCUTTING CURRENT ECONOMIC SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO HIT THE OIL-RICH MIDDLE EASTERN NATION IN THE POCKETBOOK AS TEHERAN MOVES FORWARD WITH ITS NUCLEAR PROGRAM.

UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING MONITORS ARE BAILING OUT OF SYRIA, STYMIED AND FRUSTRATED IN THEIR ATTEMPTS TO FOLLOW UP KOFI ANNAN’S EFFORTS TO FIND A WAY OUT OF THE GROWING CONFLICT THAT HAS CAUSED THOUSANDS OF CITIZENS TO BE KILLED. ONE U-N DEPUTY PLAINLY STATES THAT BOTH OPPOSITION REBELS AND THE ASSAD REGIME HAVE “CHOSEN THE SIDE OF WAR” AT THIS JUNCTURE, HENCE THE DECISION TO GET U-N MONITORS OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND LEAVE ANY FURTHER ACTIONS UP TO THE DISCRETION OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL. IN AFGHANISTAN, WHERE N-A-T-O- AND U-S FORCES REMAIN ENGAGED THERE’S WORD OF THE DEATH OF TWO MORE U-S SERVICE PERSONNEL IN AN ATTACK ON THEM BY AFGHAN POLICE; SEVEN OTHER AMERICAN ARMED FORCES MEMBERS DIED IN THURSDAY’S CRASH OF A BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER IN KANDAHAR. IN IRAQ, WHERE U-S COMBAT TROOPS ARE NO LONGER STATIONED, THE TALLY OF DEAD HAS NOW ESTABLISHED AT OVER 90 FROM A SERIES OF ATTACKS ACROSS MANY REGIONS OF THE COUNTRY THURSDAY.

THERE HAS BEEN ANOTHER INSTANCE OF POLICE IN AFGHANISTAN KILLING AMERICANS SERVING WASHINGTON AND N-A-T-O IN THE INTERNATIONAL SECURITY ASSISTANCE FORCE. TWO U-S MILITARY PERSONNEL DIED FRIDAY WHEN A POLICE OFFICER OPENED FIRE AT A LOCATION IN A WESTERN PROVINCE OF AFGHANISTAN. SEVEN OTHER AMERICAN TROOPS WERE KILLED ABOUT 24 HOURS AGO, NOT BY POLICE BUT FROM THE WRECKAGE OF AN ARMY BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER THAT ALL TOLD CLAIMED ELEVEN LIVES IN THE KANDAHAR REGION TO THE SOUTH. POLICE AND OTHER AFGHANS WHO ARE OUR OSTENSIBLE PARTNERS HAVE TURNED ON FOREIGN TROOPS IN COUNTRY, KILLING 36 OF THEM SO FAR THIS YEAR.

WEST NILE CONTINUES TO PLAGUE PARTS OF THE U-S BOTH NEAR AND FAR. IN TEXAS, AERIAL SPRAYING TO COMBAT MOSQUITO CARRIERS OF THE DISEASE WILL BE HAPPENING AROUND DALLAS, WHERE 10 OF THE STATE’S SEVENTEEN WEST NILE-RELATED FATALITIES IN 2012 HAVE OCCURRED. CLOSER TO HOME IN ORANGE COUNTY, FOR THE SECOND TIME IN RECENT WEEKS INSECTS FOUND TO BE INFECTED WITH THE VIRAL AILMENT HAVE BEEN LOCATED IN THE VICINITY OF GOSHEN, ACCORDING TO COUNTY HEALTH COMMISSIONER DR. JEAN HUDSON. DOCTOR HUDSON WILL HAVE MORE TO SAY ABOUT THAT AND OTHER SUBJECTS AS SHE’S FEATURED AS OUR ON-AIR GUEST THIS MORNING.

WITH THAT, DR. HUDSON IS OFFERING REMINDERS TO THE PUBLIC THAT MAY HELP THEM BECOME AWARE ABOUT THE SPREAD AND PREVENTION OF THE DISEASE. ONE IS TO MINIMIZE ACTIVITIES OUT OF DOORS BETWEEN DUSK AND DAWN. WEARING OF LONG-SLEEVED SHIRTS AND OTHER WAYS TO COVER UP EXPOSED SKIN WHEN POSSIBLE ARE ALSO A GOOD IDEA. MOREOVER, PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD BE VIGILANT IN LOOKING OUT FOR AND ELIMINATING AREAS OF STANDING WATER WHICH ALLOW AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE DISEASE-CARRYING INSECTS TO BREED.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE SLOATSBURG URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY? IT HAD EXISTED, BUT IS NO MORE AS IT WAS ONE OF OVER 100 LOCAL ENTITIES IN NEW YORK THAT WERE ELIMINATED WITH THE STROKE OF GOVERNOR CUOMO’S PEN THURSDAY. CUOMO’S SIGNATURE ON TWO BILLS MEANS A TOTAL OF 123 URBAN RENEWAL AGENCIES, WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITIES AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS DEEMED TO BE UNNECESSARY WILL NOT BE RE-AUTHORIZED. SEVERAL OTHER AGENCIES IN ORANGE COUNTY WERE INCLUDED IN THE STATEWIDE LIST OF GOVERNMENTAL AND GOVERNMENT-AFFILIATED ENTITIES THAT ARE EITHER OUTDATED, REDUNDANT OR THAT ARE OTHERWISE UNNECESSARY. SOME IN THAT NUMBER ARE FOUND IN ORANGE COUNTY AND INCLUDE THE PORT JERVIS CITY PARKING AUTHORITY, THE DEERPARK INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY AND THE URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY IN THE VILLAGE OF WARWICK. INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITIES HAVE BEEN THE OBJECT OF CRITICISM IN SOME CIRCLES, AND NUMEROUS I-D-A’S IN THE REGION ALSO GOT THE AX FROM THE GOVERNOR, INCLUDING THOSE IN THE CITY OF BEACON, VILLAGE OF MONTICELLO AND TOWN OF FALLSBURG.

PUBLIC SAFETY AUTHORITIES IN THE TOWN OF WALLKILL ARE LOOKING INTO THE CAUSE OF A ONE-VEHICLE MISHAP ON SILVER LAKE-SCOTCHTOWN ROAD. IT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE THE NOON HOUR THURSDAY WHEN, FOR UNKNOWN REASONS A CAR OPERATED BY 63-YEAR-OLD ARTHUR STOUT OF MIDDLETOWN LEFT THE ROADWAY NEAR ITS INTERSECTION WITH MUD MILLS ROAD AND STRUCK A UTILITY POLE. IT TOOK CONSIDERABLE TIME AND EFFORT FOR RESCUERS TO FREE STOUT FROM HIS VEHICLE. ONCE THAT HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED, STOUT WAS TAKEN TO O-R-M-C WHERE HE’S BEING TREATED FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED IN THE CRASH. POLICE SAY THAT STOUT’S CONDITION UPON BEING TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WAS DESCRIBED AS STABLE BY CREWS WITH THE TOWN OF WALLKILL VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE SQUAD. POWER WAS KNOCKED OUT IN THE AREA FOR A TIME AFTER THE FORCE WITH WHICH STOUT’S VEHICLE STRUCK THE UTILITY POLE SHEARED IT IN TWO.
