Co-signed bipartisan letter in support of funding for FHWA Emergency Relief

On January 12, 2012, U.S. Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, M.D. (NY-19) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation is releasing $89,751,296 in congressionally-approved emergency relief money to New York state through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Emergency Relief program, which aids in repairs to transportation infrastructure. Funds will be made available to federal roads and bridges in counties that were severely affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, including counties within New York’s Nineteenth Congressional District. Specifically, this investment will help fund emergency repairs needed to restore essential traffic, minimize the extent of damage, or protect the remaining facilities as well as permanent repairs necessary to restore the highway to its pre-disaster condition.

As a co-chair of the non-partisan Hurricane Irene Coalition in the House of Representatives, Hayworth and colleagues sent a letter to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers and Ranking Member Norm Dicks and requested funding for the FHWA Emergency Relief program. The letter was co-signed by Hayworth and 15 fellow Democratic and Republican House colleagues who represent districts affected by major disasters in 2011. This funding was secured when Congress recently passed an additional $2.3 billion in funding for disaster aid.

Congresswoman Hayworth supported the legislation which appropriated this emergency funding and applauded the federal DOT for its allocation of funding to New York’s 19th Congressional District, as it will provide critical aid to the state in its rebuilding efforts from last year’s devastating storms.
