Orange Regional Medical Center and Catskill Regional Medical Centered Honored by NorMet
The Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS), comprised of Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center, was recently honored by the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association (NorMet) with the 2012 System Quality and Patient Safety Award for their Project ZERO CLABSI (Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection). Specifically, this initiative focused on reducing bloodstream infections in intensive care patients. NorMet represents and supports 30 hospitals in the Hudson Valley region (including Catskill Regional and Orange Regional) to achieve a collective goal of increasing operational effectiveness and better meet the healthcare needs of the communities each hospital services.
The multi-disciplinary team introduced several new processes specifically designed to decrease CLABSI rates. This included the implementation of a central line maintenance checklist which clearly identified action steps to be taken. The checklist was used in multiple ways, by different personnel, to reduce CLABSI rates. As a result of combined efforts, the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) at Orange Regional and Catskill Regional have been CLABSI-free for 15 months.
“This is an incredible accomplishment and I applaud our devoted staff members, particularly the ICU Infection Control leaders as well as the physicians, who make Catskill Regional and Orange Regional a safer environment for our patients every day,” says Rose Baczewski, Vice President of Quality for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System.
The nomination submitted by the Greater Hudson Valley Health System was one of 15 applications reviewed by a panel of seven judges. This is the third year of the competition and allows member hospitals an opportunity to showcase their success in achieving excellence in patient safety, quality of care and operational effectiveness.
