Google Plus is Taking Over the SchoolyardJan 24th, 2013 | By HV Insider | Category: Lifestyle
To people who don’t understand how to use Google Plus, it may seem not nearly as worthwhile as Facebook or other social media platforms. In truth, though, Google Plus is superior in many ways to other social media websites. Approximately 90 million people are on Google Plus, which is more people than those who are using Twitter. Plus, Google’s social media platform is growing quickly. In July of 2011, Google Plus had 10 million users. In April of 2012, that number had grown to 170 million – and it’s still rising. Yet another way to connect with people may feel overwhelming, but Google Plus may actually be the most important player in the game.
Google Plus gathers your contacts into things called “Circles.” Circles help you to organize your contacts by who they are to you – friends, family members, business contacts or just people you happen to be connected with on social media. This is great because you can take all of your business contacts you’re connected with on LinkedIn, all of your actual friends from Facebook and your online buddies from Twitter and reach them all with Google Plus (assuming they have a Google account, of course.) Then, you can communicate with each different circle in its own way.
Google “Hangouts” are like the social media version of group texting. You can invite various people to a Hangout and then chat with them all at once, in real time. This is a huge help for professionals. Most people can’t coordinate schedules with five other people to show up in the same place at the same time, but getting people to commit to a virtual meeting is much easier.
One of the best things about Twitter – and something that Facebook is lacking – is trending topics. You can type a hashtag and keyword into Twitter and have everything that’s been said about that keyword pop up. This helps you to connect with people who have the same interests or goals as you. Google Plus has the same feature, making it a cinch to connect with the people you want to.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Google is probably going to be partial to Google Plus users. This means that while other websites may be able to rank on Google, Google Plus users will have an even better chance. The more you use Google Plus, the better your ranking will be. That means that more people will see what you’re doing, increasing your exposure. It’s an easy solution: the more active you are on Google Plus, the more people will see your vacancies and recruiting efforts.
