Free tax preparation help Mount Saint Mary College students participate in IRS VITA program

Local individuals with low to moderate incomes (generally $49,000 or less) who need help with their tax forms can request free income tax preparation assistance through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Mount Saint Mary College students have teamed up with PathStone Community Improvement of Newburgh to provide the service.  The college volunteers are David Mirro of Hicksville,  Brittany Shatwell and Kashmira Bhagwandeen of Middletown, Lauren Arneth of Chester, Marc Curry of Carmel, Christopher Rollin of Otisville and Marco Crescimanni of Selden.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) notes that “Seniors and low to moderate income members of the Newburgh community are getting the help they need with their taxes this year thanks to these seven students.  In volunteering their time and energy with PathStone, they are making a significant difference in the lives of those in need.  I commend this organization and these fine individuals for all of their efforts.”

The accounting program at the Mount offers a sequence of specialized instruction in accounting theory, cost management, budgeting, auditing, taxation, accounting systems and accounting as a management tool.

The volunteers also completed 16 hours of on-line training plus a full day of on-site training with IRS representative Patricia Faulkner from Albany.  All returns will be reviewed by Fletcher of PathStone before they are finalized.
