The City of Newburgh gun buyback event scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 at the House of Refuge, 131 Broadway has been postponed due to the expected heavy snow. The next event will be at the same location on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The gun buyback program enables individuals to turn in firearms to police without fear of charges. Participants will be rewarded with Shop-Rite gift cards in amounts varying from $25 for an inoperable weapon, $100 for a working handgun, $50 dollars for a shotgun or rifle and $150 for an assault rifle. To date, City of Newburgh Police have recovered more than 80 guns.
The program will run through March 18, 2013, and in addition to the special drop-off events, guns may be turned into the City of Newburgh Police Department at the front desk. Or, you may call Lt. Pete Leach directly at (845) 569-7532 to arrange for pickup
