Claudia Jacobs – Life is Just a Bowl of CherriesAug 7th, 2012 | By Claudia Jacobs | Category: Lifestyle
This past weekend I took a tour of 4 historic homes and gardens in Port Jervis. Each home had its unique character thanks to not only the current owners but every owner before them. I can’t say I had a favorite but I did have favorite features of each home.
There was the stained glass windows, the circular hallway with the curved door, the beautiful carved woodwork, the turquoise and white wallpaper with the turquoise and white doors throughout the 2nd floor of one home.
Oh how I absolutely loved the gardens. Burst of colorful flowers springing from gardens, urns, pots, walkways and steps. A visual feast of strategically placed statues, a water fountain, a picket fence with the gate to a surprise seating area, the outdoor gazebo and one outdoor living area with such amazing space planning it included a sandbox and hammock. I wanted to linger.
One house had the largest backyard and pool in the area according to the brochure. By the pool was a table with refreshments for the guests: a pitcher of cold refreshing water and a large bright blue bowl filled with sweet, succulent cherries. I was thrilled to see such a colorful sight.
Why is this decorator writing about a bowl of cherries after such a delightful tour of homes and gardens? I’ve been thinking about that bowl of cherries for days now. There may be a few reasons why I can’t get the image out of my head.
Can it be because I am gluten free? Home upon home had refreshments and a light snack. There was fruit punch with fresh mint or bottled water and cookies, lots of cookies. Maybe I was happy that I could eat something and they were very delicious.
The joy of the gardens combined with the delight of the cherries brought me back to my childhood in the Bronx. My grandparents owned the lot next to their home where my grandmother had a very large flower garden. I have fond memories of this magical spot. Behind the house were a few cherry trees too. We always had fresh cherries in the summer in the garden.
It made me happy to remember my grandmother’s garden. To me she is my garden angel and that may be why whenever I see an angel in a flower garden I feel joy.
A lot of work went into creating these beautiful homes and gardens. It was an honor to see the fruits of their labor.
Life is just a bowl of cherries filled with sweet memories.
