Claudia Jacobs – Clutter Can Cause Chaos

Sep 10th, 2013 | By | Category: Lifestyle

Clutter can cause chaos to your life and it can ruin a well-designed room.

It doesn’t matter how much time or money you spend on decorating your house.  It doesn’t matter how lovely the pieces are in each room.  It’s doesn’t even matter how clean the house is.  If it’s cluttered, it won’t look good and it won’t feel good.  In some homes it is well contained.  In others, people are literally buried alive.

Depending on your situation, dealing with clutter takes time.  It did not happen overnight and won’t disappear overnight unless the crew from a television makeover shows up at your door.

Be realistic and learn to let go of things that are no longer serving any purpose in your life.  It can be stuff you want to get rid of but have not taken the time to deal with it.  Another excuse is that it is still good and you just don’t know what to do with all of it.  We will get back to that shortly.  In extreme situations, therapy is the best way to deal with emotionally letting go of your stuff.

Tackle one room at a time or one drawer or cabinet or closet.  Take advantage of winter storm days.  My kids and I worked on the family room in our basement during the last snow day.   It felt great!

The obvious choices for unwanted items are trash, selling it, donations.  Yes it is true that one man’s trash is another person’s treasure but sometimes it really is just trash.  There is a difference between shabby chic and shabby.  Everyone has his or her own comfort level with what is acceptable and what is not.  Ideally, it is best to have many options in order to keep the good stuff out of the landfills.

What do you do with your stuff?  Good question. If you have any suggestions on what to do with the stuff, please send it in to to share with other readers.

Next week: The Redesign Process
