On Thursday, March 21st, the Town of Chester Police responded to Laroe Road near Bull Mill Road after multiple motorists complained of a disorderly male in the middle of the road, yelling at passing cars and obstructing traffic.

Upon arrival, Detective Ferrara observed the subject, known to him as 49 year old Michael Varrone of Chester, begin running through a wooded area towards his residence at 11 Townsend Place.

Det. Ferrara drove to that location and arrived at the house at about the same time as Varrone.  As Varrone entered the residence, a brief struggle ensued during which Ferrara suffered a torn tendon in his left arm.  Varrone then locked himself in the residence and ceased contact with the officers outside.

The Orange County Special Operations Group was requested to the scene, an arrest warrant was received for Varrone and a search warrant was issued for the residence.

After several hours of attempted communications with Varrone by the Crisis Negotiation Team members, the entry team entered the residence.  Varrone was located in an upstairs bedroom and taken into custody with no further injuries occurring.

Varrone was arraigned in town court on the felony charge of assault in the second degree and sent to Orange County Jail in lieu of $5000 bail with a return court date of April 1st.
