Fr. Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, president of Mount Saint Mary College, announced that Mary Dana Hinton, PhD, has been named vice president for academic affairs.

Hinton, who has served the Mount since 2011 as vice president for strategic planning, replaces Iris Turkenkopf, PhD, who is stepping down this month after 39 years at the college.

“It is important to have an effective and strategic academic affairs leader,” said Fr. Mackin, “and even more so when prior leaders had such a long presence. Mary Hinton has focused us on new ways to pursue planning and institutional effectiveness across the board. She’s held workshops and also informal events which have engaged faculty and staff. I am pleased Dr. Hinton has agreed to serve the college as vice president for academic affairs during this time of great progress.”

During her two years at Mount Saint Mary College, Hinton has overseen strategic planning, academic assessment, institutional research and retention efforts.

She has guided the development of the Center for Student Success, focused on college-wide retention efforts including academic coaching, advising, developmental courses, tutoring and the Higher Education Opportunity Program.

She works with all accreditation requirements, and was instrumental in developing an assessment process with the academic business division to garner specialized accreditation of the Mount’s business programs from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

Prior to serving at Mount Saint Mary College, Hinton was at Misericordia University where she held several roles including associate VP of academic affairs and chief planning and diversity officer, and assistant professor in religious studies. She was responsible for all academic assessment efforts working with three deans and the faculty; oversaw the core curriculum; managed Student Success Center staff; engaged in a strategic planning process; and managed direct reports focused on diversity and inclusive excellence.

Hinton has taught in the graduate programs at Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry and in the University of Pennsylvania Executive Doctorate in Higher Education program. She serves on several national boards including the Association for General and Liberal Studies; the Religious Education Association; and is the regionally elected coordinator of the American Academy of Religion Mid-Atlantic Region, where she has also served as president.

In addition to having taught college level courses, maintaining an active research agenda and publishing articles, she also has experience in identifying and replicating successful practices in public education, and in delivering entrepreneurial training curriculum.

Hinton, from Milford, Pa., earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., her master’s in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Ks., and a PhD in Religion and Religious Education with High Honors from Fordham University.

She was recommended by a search committee after a thorough process, including advertisement, assessing letters and resumes, selection for telephone interviews, and choosing five candidates – including Hinton – for on-campus meetings.

“Clearly, Dr. Hinton has a stellar resume,” said Fr. Mackin, “with leadership in the strategic academic setting across the board, and in the liberal arts environment Mount Saint Mary College wants to provide for our students.”

Mount Saint Mary College is ranked a Top-Tier University by U.S. News & World Report, and offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for careers in healthcare, business, education, social services, communications, media and more.

Mount Saint Mary College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the National Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, the New York State Education Department and the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.

The 32nd Asbury Short Film Concert, New York City’s longest running short film exhibition, returns to the historic Rosendale Theatre on Saturday, June 8th at 7:30pm. This acclaimed touring program of international award winning films will be presented by Asbury Shorts New York, in cooperation with the Rosendale Theatre Collective, and hosted by TV personality and Ulster County resident, Bruce Littlefield. The theatre is located at 408 Main Street, Rosendale, New York. General admission tickets cost $10 or $8 for theatre members. For more information please visit www.rosendaletheatre.org or call 845-658-8989. Presenting sponsor is Rondout Savings Bank.

The Asbury Short Film “Concert” combines classic, award winning shorts with new international festival honorees, creating a rare opportunity for audiences to see world-class short films in a theater rather than on a computer or iPad. Academy Award nominated director Jason Reitman (JUNO, Up in the Air, Thank You for Smoking and the most recently, Young Adult) calls Asbury Shorts: “The best short film show I’ve ever seen.” The fast-paced, highly entertaining evening features the best in Live Action, Comedy, Drama and outstanding Animation.

Highlights of the June 8th show include:

ASAD – From internationally renowned TV commercial director Bryan Buckley, this remarkable coming of age story is about a young Somali boy living precariously day-to-day in his war torn country. It was nominated for a 2013 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film and is a five-time festival winner, including Best Narrative Short Film at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Awarded Best Short Film at the 2012 The Los Angeles Film Festival, among many other international film festival honors.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore – The 2012 Academy Award Winner for Best Animated Short, from directors William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg, is a captivating short story of a magical library of flying books. Created by mixing computer animation, miniatures and traditional hand drawn animation, it’s no surprise it’s won more than 12 awards and is a world over audience favorite.

Time Freak – This fast-paced comedy is the tale of a man who invents a time machine for which the sole purpose is to correct a communication problem at his local laundry. The story behind the making of the film is as wonderful as is that of the short itself. Newly married Andrew Bowler (director) and Gigi Causey (producer) used their $25,000 nest egg to complete the production. After initial rejection by Sundance and many other major festivals, it received a 2012 Oscar nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences… talk about a happy ending!

“We’re thrilled to be coming back to the historic Rosendale Theatre for a third time with the world’s best short films!” said Doug LeClaire, director of the New York Short Film Concert. “It’s equally exciting to have Bruce Littlefield, an Ulster County resident and award-winning author, serve as our guest host. Asbury Shorts is truly amazed at the amount of encouragement and promotional support we are receiving from local Ulster businesses such as Ulster County Tourism, ROLL Magazine, Frecklebelly Designs, The 1850′s House, The Rosendale Theatre Collective and our main presenting sponsors: Rondout Savings Bank and Tuthilltown Spirits! The film lineup is beyond superb, including the 2013 Oscar nominee for Best Live Action Short Film: “ASAD,” which we are honored to be including in this eclectic, hilarious and highly entertaining showcase. Come down on June 8th and have some old time movie house fun!”

Founded in 1980, Asbury Shorts events originally took place in a church basement, near Asbury Avenue in Westbury, New York. The programs combined local area college films with a few indie shorts discovered at out of town festivals. In 1987, Asbury changed its name to “The Asbury Shorts Show of New York” and moved to Haft Auditorium on the campus of F.I.T. in Manhattan. The format and entertainment focus changed drastically and the staff began to pursue major international award winning independent films. Celebrity Guest Hosts included: ?Peter Gallagher, Bob Balaban, Manfred Kirchheimer, John Avildsen, Harvey Keitel, Matthew Modine, Pia Lidstrom, Dylan McDermott and Joan Micklin Silver. The1990′s saw the addition of “live elements” to the festivities, including musical performances, art and photography exhibits and unannounced comedy bits, surprising the audience in between the films. In 1998, Asbury Shorts was presented overseas for the first time at the Royal Festival Hall in London, kicking off the start of the “touring years”.

“The Asbury Short Film Concert” has been presented at: The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Lake Shore Theatre in Chicago, Visions Cinema in Washington, D.C., The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ, Summer Stage in Central Park, The Director’s Guild Theater in Manhattan, The AERO Theatre in Santa Monica, CA, Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, Long Island and the Leminske Theater in Berlin, Germany to name just a few. Guest Hosts such as Edie Falco, Adrian Grenier, Olympia Dukakis and Richard Belzer have graced the Asbury NY stages. Each year the stops along our tour grow larger. Our audiences’ rave about the amazing experience they have had, seeing the world’s best short films on the big screen! For more information about Asbury Shorts please visit the website at www.asburyshortsnyc.com or call 718.510.6929.

Bruce Littlefield is a best-selling author, lifestyle expert, and an arbiter of American fun. He shares his passionate curiosity (and occasional mischievousness) through his books and TV appearances. Bruce has appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC News, FOX News, MSNBC, The Rachael Ray Show, NPR, Sirius, and numerous other programs, and has been featured in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the New York Post, People Magazine, OK! Magazine, Saveur, This Old House, the New York Daily News, Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. Currently promoting his latest book “Moving In: Tales of an Unlicensed Marriage”, he joins in the festivities as Host of the 32nd Asbury Short Film Concert at The Rosendale Theatre on June 8th.

The Rosendale Theatre Collective is dedicated to preserving the historic Rosendale Theatre and enhancing the cultural life and economic vitality of Rosendale and Ulster County through film, the performing arts and educational programming. With the emphasis on supporting local and regional artists, the Collective works together with other arts organizations to sustain diverse cultural activities and exchanges for a wide audience. As of August 19, 2010 the Rosendale Theatre is owned and operated by the Rosendale Theatre Collective, a 501[c][3] nonprofit organization. All donations to the Rosendale Theatre Collective are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. To become a member, make a donation or learn more about events and programs coming to the Rosendale Theatre please visit the website at: RosendaleTheatre.org or call 845.658.8989.

Orange County Tourism’s wheels have been busy turning with summer vacations in mind. Loads of cool happenings have been posted to the calendar at www.OrangeTourism.org as well as a wide array of attractions, lodging and dining options. Pick your favorites and motor into the hub of the Hudson Valley for fun all season long. Located just one hour north of New York City, Orange County is an easy trip on the New York State Thruway or Interstate 84. Here’s a sample of June jaunts to jump start your summer.

Don’t worry, your GPS is working! When you head for this year’s Hoboken International Film Festival, you’ll find yourself at the beautiful, historic Paramount Theatre in Middletown. Showcasing numerous film and television stars and the world’s most cutting edge films, the event ranks as one of the top 10 best film festivals in the world. Mingle with the stars and filmmakers at the Gala Awards Ceremony and Party hosted by superstar standup comedian Gilbert Gottfried. Whether you purchase an all-access pass or buy tickets to individual galas and screenings, you’ll have stars in your eyes. The Paramount will roll out the red carpet for this spectacular from May 31st through June 6th.

Park the car and lace up your running shoes for the Classic 10K Road Race Weekend on June 1st and 2nd, a Middletown highlight for many years. The route encompasses Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter’s boyhood training loops. The main race, which attracts serious runners from around the world, provides a scenic tour of Middletown’s historic neighborhoods and parks. The whole family can celebrate fun and fitness along this course. There are races for kids on Saturday, and a race and walk on Sunday before the Classic. A community health expo, awards ceremony, and finish line party round out the fun for spectators and runners on Sunday.

On June 1st, the wheels on the bus will take the whole family round to Cornwall-on-Hudson’s Riverfest for a full day of entertainment along side the majestic Hudson River. Meet the shuttle buses at the Cornwall Middle School and enjoy the short ride to scenic Donahue Park for the festivities. Bring a lawn blanket and lounge to the great live music as you take in the spectacular view of the surrounding Hudson Highlands. Stroll the craft vendor booths and food fair. There’s lots of green space for the children to play and special activities planned just for them. The shuttles will be making continuous loops from 11am to 6pm.

Pedal power is the pre-requisite for the Stewart State Forest Bike Tour in New Windsor on Sunday, June 2nd. Bring your mountain bike, BMX or hybrid bicycle to this ride which offers three loops, each geared for different levels of experience from beginner to expert. The routes range from 8 to 17 miles. Some are on old roads while others traverse some gravelly and single track terrain. Pre-registration is required for the ride which also includes lunch, beer, ice cream, bike demos, massage, and more. You’ll be proud to wear your new event T-shirt home after the end of a great day in the country.

Zoom over to the great lawn next to the Inn at Bear Mountain State Park for one of the coolest car cruises at one of the prettiest places in the Hudson Valley every Wednesday night, weather permitting, until September 11th. Hundreds of street rods and classics motor parade into this weekly drive-in while masses of motorcycles flank the far end of the field near the carousel. Don’t miss any of the 6 to 9pm action. Burgers, beer, and other casual fare are served up by the park’s food service so you can dine right there as the sounds of doo wop fill the air. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs and watch the parade of vehicles lining up on the grass, then meander up and down the rows finding your favorites. It’s a great midweek getaway for the entire family.

When it comes to summer fun, the rubber meets the road in Orange County! Find a complete list of attractions, lodging, and events at www.OrangeTourism.org.
On Saturday, May 18, 2013, the Newburgh Rowing Club hosted the Hudson Valley Rowing League’s Novice Rowing Championship, which brought in crew teams from all over the Hudson Valley. On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the Newburgh Rowing Club hosted the Eastern NYS Public High School Rowing Championship, the City of Newburgh’s largest athletic event, bringing in crew teams from as far away as the Eastern part of Long Island, with over 1,000 people present.

“The Novice Championship on Saturday was a great event, it is where rowers who are in their first year compete,” said Coach Ed Kennedy, Programs Director for the Newburgh Rowing Club and Head Coach of the NFA Varsity Crew Team.”

“Easterns was very successful given the atrocious weather conditions. The water became way too choppy and we had to cut it short, although we got all the varsity events in. I absolutely am proud of every athlete who rowed that day, regardless of their team, they competed in the most difficult and unforgiving conditions and they all took it on like champions. This is why we love hosting these events. Only Newburgh could have pulled this one off.”

The Newburgh Rowing Club girls’ double, with Catherine Cavaliari and Willa Arsenault took first place in their event, the Womens 2x, and First Place overall in their division. Overall the NFA Crew Team finished second, with the Bay Shore HS Crew Team, one of the top teams in the State, taking first place, said Coach Kennedy.

On May 11, 2013, despite the rain and wind, the Newburgh Rowing Club hosted the American Rivers Regatta, followed by the Great Hudson River Cleanup, sponsored by American Rivers. The Friends of Newburgh Crew also held a Barbecue Fundraiser, sponsored by Billy Joe Ribworks.

“We modified the Regatta event because of the weather conditions,” said Coach Ed Kennedy. “We shortened the course and then moved the event indoors to our Boathouse where the rowers competed on indoor rowing machines. The safety of the rowers is always our first concern. We thank the Kingston High School Crew Team and the North Rockland High School Crew Team for coming out for this event.”

NFA Girls Varsity 8+ during American Rivers Regatta – photo by S. Santiago

Following the Regatta, Friends of Newburgh Crew, the not-for-profit which supports the NFA Crew Team, held a successful Barbecue fundraiser. “We are thankful to Billy Joe Ribworks, which provided the barbecue food and supplies to us at cost, for their sponsorship of the event,” said NFA Crew Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo. “Mr. Kaplan and Billy Joe’s have always been so generous to the Crew Team.”

Finally, Newburgh Rowing hosted the Great Hudson River Cleanup in which rower, families, and community volunteers picked up trash and debris from the shoreline and River and recycled, reused or saw to its proper disposal. “We covered just about the entire city shore line,” said Coach Kennedy. “We had well over 100 volunteers, between the Newburgh Rowing Club, the NFA Crew Team and their parents, and members of the community. The big haul in weight was about 10

Great River Cleanup

tons of drift wood loaded on to a 40 foot trailer. Thanks to the generosity of Cutrone Sand and Stone, in Newburgh, the wood was recycled into mulch. We have another trailer half full that we are still working on.”

“In addition, thanks to the continued generosity of Taylor Recycling, we were able to fill a 30 yard dumpster, which was taken away by the Taylor Company. The garbage that our volunteers hauled out of the River and the shoreline includes two crushed boats, several dock pieces, 11 automobile tires, about a dozen pallets, 7 chairs, a large broken buoy, 3 broken garbage cans, a large air conditioner, a super large anchor, several pipes and piecess of metal, automobile parts and part of a roof.”

“Coach Kennedy and the Crew Team have been cleaning the River and the Shoreline for the last 20-plus years,” said Team Mom Juliana LoBiondo, “this is the first year we had a sponsor, the American Rivers organization. They started the latest effort in earnest on Earth Day and Saturday was the last big push until after Crew season ends in early June. Coach Kennedy teaches the kids that they don’t just row in the River, they are stewards of the River as well.”

The Town of Deerpark Police Department D.A.R.E. program is seeking contributions from businesses and individuals to fund various aspects of the program. A letter was sent out by D.A.R.E. police officer Frank McGrath requesting donations. This is the first year that the Town of Deerpark is participating in the program coordinating their efforts at the Hamilton Bicentennial School in Cuddebackville. In years past, the program was solely handled by the City of Port Jervis Police Department, which is now running the program at the Anna S. Kuhl Elementary School. The program is taught to students in 5th grade.

“We are so happy to coordinate the D.A.R.E. program at Hamilton Bicentennial this year,” said Deerpark Supervisor Karl A. Brabenec. “It is critically important to teach our youth about the dangers of drug addiction and illegal gang activity. We hope that with your help, we can reach as many students as possible to help keep them on the right path to a successful and prosperous future.”

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is an international education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled drugs, membership in gangs, and violent behavior. Students who enter the program sign a pledge not to use drugs or join gangs and are taught by local police officers about the dangers of drug use in an interactive in-school curriculum which lasts ten weeks. The D.A.R.E. program is not state or locally funded through taxpayer dollars, so therefore all of the students’ education materials, graduation ceremony/festivities and end of the year D.A.R.E. dance are solely funded through donations raised throughout the year.

Contributions can be made at or sent to the Deerpark Town Clerk’s office, 420 US Route 209, PO Box 621, Huguenot, NY 12746. Please make checks payable to the Town of Deerpark and write D.A.R.E. program in the note section of the check. All contributions are tax deductible. For more information, please contact the Deerpark Town Clerk’s office at 845-856-2210, ext. 2 or Officer Frank McGrath at 845-858-4529.
