“Our first round of Community Development mobile office hours has been very successful,” said Richard Mayfield, Director, Office of Community Development. “I believe Community Development works best when we are in the community meeting and working with the residents who can benefit most from the program’s many services. By meeting with residents and municipal officials in their communities, we are better able to help them become more familiar with the available services; and the Community Development team will gain a better understanding of what residents need,” Mayfield added.

One the most popular Community Development programs is the 0% home improvement loan which has a deferred payment option. This program affords income-eligible residents, the opportunity to have general repairs done to their homes which may include: weatherization, barrier removal and heating system replacements. Funding of up to $20,000 is available for these activities.

“I appreciate the support from our municipal leaders for making their respective village and town halls available to our Community Development team,” said Mayfield.

Any student in the Poughkeepsie City School District who does not have access to dental care will be able to have treatment and preventive care provided free of charge courtesy of New York University’s College of Dentistry. The College, in partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District, will be offering care at two mobile dental clinics set up in two schools from June 3rd-7th.

This program will be ongoing and qualifying students will receive free care twice a year. Efforts will also be made to assist those students in finding local dentistry support. The clinics will be set up in the Early Learning Center and Clinton Elementary School. Participating students at those schools will be seen during the school day. Parents may arrange to accompany them.

Students from all other buildings will be scheduled for an appointment between 2:30 and 5 p.m. at one of the two clinic sites and must have a parent or guardian accompany them to the visit. All students are being provided an information packet, including a consent form and medical history form, which must be completed in order to request an appointment.

“I’m very excited that NYU has offered to work with the Poughkeepsie City School District. There are an estimated 50 million hours of school missed annually by children who suffer from untreated dental needs,” said Dr. Lynne Pampel, Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services. “Clinton School Principal Nadine Jackson-Ivey and Early Learning Center Principal Andrea Moriarty alerted us to the possibility of providing these services through NYU in September and my office has been working diligently with NYU to finalize a contract.”

If parents have questions about the program, they can call their school nurse or the Pupil Personnel Office at 437-3473 to speak to a nurse practitioner for more information.

Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana and Commissioner Richard L. Rose of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation are pleased to announce the 2013 season opening of the County-owned museum facilities. The County’s historic Hill-Hold museum will reopen for the season Saturday, May 18. Brick House Museum will open in early June.

Hill-Hold Museum is the site of a homestead built in 1769 and is furnished to reflect the life of a Hudson Valley farmer in the 1830s. This was the era of candlelight, fireplace heat, home grown food, and homespun clothing. In addition to the house, the Hill-Hold hosts several outbuildings, including a one room school house, summer kitchen, granary, and out houses. The homestead is located on Route 416 between Montgomery and Campbell Hall.

Brick House Museum is a 1768 home that has not been restored to reflect a particular era, but rather the changes of generations of one family occupying the house for more than 200 years. Among the many rooms there is a Georgian parlor that illustrates 18th century taste and directly across the hall a Victorian parlor that reflects the Civil War period. Brick House is located between Newburgh and Montgomery on Route 17K.

Hill-Hold Museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. Brick House

Museum is open 10 am to 4 pm Saturdays and Sundays. Admission for both sites is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Staff members from Orange Regional’s Rowley Family Birthing Center raised nearly $5,000 by walking, hosting bakes and raffling themed baskets for the March of Dimes March for Babies which was held on Sunday, April 28 at Woodbury Commons in Central Valley.

Orange Regional celebrates the first birthday of its Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on May 7. “Supporting the March of Dimes mission to end premature birth goes hand in hand with our skill and expertise to care for premature and critically ill babies,” states Orange Regional’s Nursing Service Administrator of Women and Children, Theresa Fay Conte. “Orange Regional’s NICU is here for our community.”
