Assemblyman Skoufis Sponsors Women’s Rights and Equality LegislationJan 25th, 2013 | By HV Insider | Category: Political
Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) announced that he is sponsoring several women’s rights and equality bills, and that he is the newest member of the Bipartisan Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus.
“I stand in strong support of the governor’s priorities regarding women’s rights and equality in New York State,” Assemblyman Skoufis said. “I will work each and every day to ensure that the women in our state are treated as equals to their male counterparts, earn equal pay for equal work, have access to reproductive health care and are further protected from domestic violence. Anything short of these goals is simply unacceptable.”
Assemblyman Skoufis is sponsoring four bills to support women’s rights and equality. They would:
• grant expanded access to contraception (A.420);
• require fair and equal pay for women in the workforce (A.1729);
• create a registry for domestic abuse offenders (A.2454); and
• codify the Reproductive Health Act and ensure a woman’s right to choose (A. 6112 of 2012, soon to be reintroduced).
“Women today only earn 84 percent of what men do,” said Assemblyman Skoufis. “This is intolerable and not the society we strive to live in. The time has come to fully level the playing field, no exceptions.”
In continuing with his work for women’s rights, Assemblyman Skoufis also became the newest member of the Bipartisan Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus, a group of state lawmakers working to protect a woman’s right to choose.
“I will work everyday to ensure that a woman’s right to choose remains a constitutional right that is never infringed upon,” said Assemblyman Skoufis.
