On July 10, 2013 at approximately 8:46pm City of Newburgh Police responded to the area of William St. and Benkard Ave for a report of shots fired. A 47 year old City of Newburgh resident had been shot once in the lower leg. He was taken to St. Lukes Newburgh Campus for treatment. Officers on scene recovered five 9mm shell casings.
City of Newburgh Detectives conducted an investigation. On August 14, 2013 at 9:51pm in the area of Renwick St. and South Lander St. they arrested 19 year old City of Newburgh resident Donald Leid and charged him as the gunman.
A weapon has not yet been recovered.
The investigation determined that the victim was not the intended target and was merely walking in the area at the time of the gunfire.
Leid was charged with Assault in the first degree, Reckless Endangerment in the first degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree. He was held in city lockup pending arraignment.
