6 Dead, Several Injured After Metro North Crash

I fiery crash involving a Metro North commuter train and a SUV claimed the lives of 6 people Tuesday evening. The incident took place near Hawthorne during the evening rush hour commute. A Harlem line train leaving Grand Central Station at 5:45pm struck a Jeep Cherokee that was across the tracks. The impact caused the SUV to be pushed some ten car lengths before the train could come to a complete stop. By that time both the vehicle and the first car of the train were engulfed in flames.

The NTSB is conducting a full investigation into the crash, but initial reports are that the the SUV was struck by the crossbar as it lowered, hitting the back of the Jeep. The driver was then said to have exited the vehicle to check the damage before getting back in to try and cross the tracks in front of the train when she was struck.

Six people including the driver of the Jeep Cherokee were killed and over a dozen people injured. More than 400 people self evacuated the train and made it to safety. Those with injuries were treated at local area hospitals.
