Washingtonville Boy Scout Troop 16 Recognizes Two Scouts’ Advancement to Eagle

At their first Court of Honor of 2014,  Washingtonville Boy Scout Troop 16 recognized the advancement of two Scouts to the rank of Eagle. Andrew Gannon and Liam Wall were honored for their accomplishments at a ceremony held at St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville.

To attain Eagle, the scouts met the rigorous requirements, earned the necessary merit badges, and planned, fundraised for, and completed a service project in their community with the assistance of a volunteer crew.

Gannon’s project concentrated on beautifying the buildings and grounds of St. Mary’s Church with a focus on restoring the gravesite – including a 20 foot obelisk – of Father Tetrau, the church’s first pastor. “I wanted to show my appreciation to St. Mary’s for chartering Troop 16 for so many years,” said Gannon. “Now, every time I drive by the cemetery I see the positive impact a dedicated group can have on a community.” Gannon, who is a 2013 graduate of Washingtonville High School is attending Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York for engineering.

Wall, a senior at Washingtonville High School, chose the Knights of Columbus Hall on Hallock Drive for his Eagle project. The building had sustained serious damage from flooding during Hurricane Irene. Wall organized a team of volunteers to build a stone block retaining wall and restore the gardens at the entrance to the building. “The new walls not only beautify the entrance to the hall, they’ll make it easier to sandbag the doorway in the event of future threats of flooding,” said Wall.  “The hardy, perennial plants we added will also make it look nice and be easy for the Knights to maintain.”

“Congratulations to our newest Eagle Scouts,” said Troop 16 Scoutmaster Scott Santarpia.  “As the boys undertake the challenging journey to Eagle, they learn, grow, succeed, and mature. It is our privilege as Scout leaders to be a part of that journey and celebrate their accomplishments with them. These two new Eagles, Andrew and Liam, have bright futures ahead of them.”
